"We are not occupiers," Powell told a Baghdad news conference. "We have come under a legal term having to do with occupation under international law, but we came as liberators."
He goes down a notch in my eyes.

How can we be at "war" and not be occupiers? Oh wait we're not ata war. Cept we are at war. Or at least we call it war when it suits us.

This is why he wants out afterthis term. I think hes tired of being a shill.

Oh, and the parsing! "We have come under a legal term having to do with occupation under international law".

Powell is the front runner for this years Rudy Guliani "I was once a great man until I became a pathetic shill" award.

He goes down a notch in my eyes.

Others have said it best:

An ambassador is an honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country. --Henry Wotton (English diplomat and poet 1568-1639)

Try to seperate the man from the nature of the job.

Have you ever checked out the FAQ Section of the U.S. Department of State?

If not take a peek at one of the FAQs regarding what is required of one if they find themselves in a position where they have to defend a policy they may actually disagree with:

http://www.careers.state.gov/officer/faqs.html

Q. Does the system tolerate dissent?

A. As public servants, Foreign Service Officers must publicly defend U.S. government policy, despite personal reservations. There is an internal channel through which an employee may present dissenting views on specific foreign policy issues. If an officer cannot publicly defend official U.S. policy, he or she has the option to resign.

Regardless, Colin Powell is a press corps untouchable. Nobod is allowed to say anything bad about him despite the fact he's a liar. Nope, we're only allowed to respect the brilliant, thoughtful, circumspect Powell.

Powell has a cabinet level post, and considering that Dubya is a moron, I believe that Powell has a sizable voice in determining U.S. policy. I don't buy the 'just an employee doing his job' bit.

What definition of "occupiers" is he using?

Man, I really kind of respected Powell too. What a shame.
