Robert Pickton has been found guilty on 6 charges of 2nd degree murder. He still has 20 more to face. Some family members of the victims are upset that he wasn't found guilty of first degree murder. Too bad the death penalty doesn't exist in Canada. This animal would be good reason for why it should be re-instated. Has this news been broadcast in the States?

Much speculation as why the jury went for second degree rather than first. Here is a reasonable bunch of possible reasons:

In any case he going away for a long time.

So long as the man spends a goodly period of time in jail, he'll hopefully be a much lesser threat by the time he comes out...if he ever does.

I have been following this trial in the papers which means there is a lot I am not privy to but something in all this isn't right. Not that I think the guy didn't do it but how can someone who is admittedly not bright get away with all those killings and dismemberings without anyone knowing? I am actually a little bit surprised they convicted him. I can see why they didn't get him on first degree.

It will be interesting to see what comes out over the next while.

Just to let any Americans reading this thread know, by law juries in Canada are not allowed to publically discuss their deliberations. So, unlike in some famous U.S. cases, you won't see the Picton jury members on a television show talking about how they came to the verdict they did.

I wonder if they could apply for political asylum in the US.
