Riley scores 27 as Detroit dethrones L.A.
More than a decade after the "Bad Boys'' center helped the Pistons win two NBA titles, Laimbeer was a champion again as the coach of the worst-to-first Detroit Shock.
Ruth Riley scored a career-high 27 points and Detroit beat the two-time defending champion Los Angeles Sparks 83-78 on Tuesday night in the decisive third game of the WNBA Finals.
The Shock won a league-best 25 regular-season games this season, one year after losing a league-worst 23.
"It all starts with Coach,'' said Riley, the series MVP.
An hour after red, white and blue confetti fluttered through the air and fireworks exploded, Laimbeer was still celebrating.
"I have my championships, so this one is really for the ladies,'' he said. "As a coach, it doesn't get any better than this.

I'm not the biggest pro sports fan in the world, but this is AWESOME.
(I applied to be their towel boy. It was only $150 a week, but it was all I could afford.)
This is sport at its highest level. Truly for the love of it.

It's WNBA, it's not real basketball.

Dare you to say that in a roomful of Shock.
Stick it in your grammatron, whatever that is.

I am a Houston Comets fan (powerhouse of the WNBA) but I always love to see LA fall. Well done Shock!
I wish they would expand at least the finals to a best of seven.
Lisa Leslie aint got the game of Sheryl Swoopes!!

Yes I dare and you should calm down, sports is nothing to go so uppity over. I still think WNBA is not an exciting sport to watch, men are just athletically better, that's just nature.

So LA are (or were) 'champs of the world'? Tell me, how many teams from countries other than America did they have to beat to gain this title?

Congrats to the Shock. It was an exciting game, albeit very dirty. But if the Houston Comets couldn't win, at least LA didn't.

And here's hoping that the city of Detroit gets to cheer for that baseball record they're flirting with.

Should have put a smilie in, no uppity tone intended.
Disagree about women athletes, though. Not to say they can compete against men in most things, but women's athletics is just as good to watch, for me.
But that's a topic for another thread.....you are invited to start one.
