A FRUIT-picking trip to southern New South Wales ended in the death of a Scottish backpacker who became embroiled in a bizarre row about creationism and evolution.

English backpacker Alexander Christian York, 33, was today sentenced to a maximum of five years jail for the manslaughter of Scotsman Rudi Boa in January last year.

Mr Boa, 28, died on January 27 after being stabbed by York at the Blowering Holiday Park, near Tumut.

A man is dead, and that is sad, but a big part of me went "yep, that about sums up the rationality of religion".

Having said that, this shouldn't be used to score cheap points against creationists.

Yeah, and the exact circumstances shouldn't be taken into account by a judge and jury either. In fact, as soon as they see the bloody knife, they should just hang you on the spot :rolleyes:

I've always been of the mindset that killing another person should mean that you never ever under any circumstances see freedom again. Perhaps some flexibility on that if there are circumstances that involve something like a perception of self-defense, as in a fight or whatever.

In any case, it's worth noting also that stabbing someone to death like that really shows a very very deep violent and twisted factor going on. Shooting someone can be a spur of the moment thing and fast. Stabbing, you have to get right up to them physically, fight with them as they struggle to keep the knife away, plunge it into their body, usually repeatedly and feel the warm blood on you and watch the life fade from their body as they struggle and beg. You have to keep doing it with no effect of this. That shows a true drive to kill.


What the judge says about it being an accident is absolute bull, or at least, I find it very very hard to believe. It sounds, at best, extremely far fetched. He'll be out in three years. That's not justice.

Oh so good people can get away with 5 years in jail for murder? A hope it is appealed. It doesn't matter if the guy 'forgot' he was holding a knife or not, he has the responsibility to maintain control of himself and failed that completely.
