I know some of you think cable TV or TV itself is a waste of electrons, but C-SPAN continues to provide such wonderful content I can't help but gush effusively about the content it airs daily. Despite being a pseudopolitical junkie, I don't find the hearings and live House and Senate debates as interesting as Washington Journal and Booktv (both of which I've raved about in previous threads). Even if the Vox Populi is the ravings of a lunatic (Ron Paul..., Bush lied, people died..., America is a Christian nation...) I still prefer Washington Journals impariality and balance to the peanut gallery/ambush the dissenter tone of Conservative talk radio.

And then there's Booktv on C-SPAN2 weekends.

I don't read books as much as I should or want to, but at least the recordings of signing tour appearances by authors gives me a glimpse of what I'm missing. Be it crazy Ann Coulter, my dad in abstentia Jared Diamond or people like Marthe Cohen, a spy during WWII who wrote about her adventures in "Behind Enemy Lines", I find a lot to enjoy over the weekend. Sometimes the issue/book being discussed hits home for me like the C/ID debate or church state issues and this morning they aired a discussion of the latter.

Unfortunately I missed about half of it but what I saw of the panel for Ellery's Protest (http://www.booktv.org/program.aspx?ProgramId=8967&SectionName=History&PlayMedia=No) was very interesting. The host for the discussion was a Jewish organization I missed the name of, and the audience was very receptive to his message and that of fellow panelists Thomas Mann and author Stephen Solomon (http://stephendsolomon.com/). During the Q&A session there was even a dig at IDers and a shout out to Judge Jones.

I'm sure some of you who think that all religious people are woo and stupid will poo poo him since he's still a UU, but Ellery Schempp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellery_Schempp) was absolutely delightful, erudite and for some strange reason - to those of you who think religious people need to be told who stupid and woo they are - was very polite to his Jewish hosts (and obviously was to Stephen Solomon). He's also still very active and committed to the Secularist cause since he's an advisor to the Secular Coalition of America (http://www.secular.org/). He was even named to the Abbington High School hall of fame (though for his works in physics).

I would love to have Ellery Schempp speak at a future TAM.

Oh, and if any of you who read the title and didn't know immediately who I was referring to, please turn your church/state debate credentials in until you've taken the remedial course. :p

Wait, C-Span is the good channel. Maybe you're thinking of CNN that people ridicule? They were the ones who had the round table discussion of atheism without a single atheist present, weren't they?

If you watch Washington Journal, you'll realize I'm not the only one.

No comments on Ellery Schempp?

Other than he should be enshrined? No, not really.

You really watch C-Span? You do realize that the callers are all paid actors, right?

Holy *****.......I used to awaken to that crap......then I awoke!

Political nonsense X 10........

I am beginning to think football (american) fans have a leading edge on TV viewing habits.

Long live the Britney story! ;)

What an interesting read - thanks for the link, US!

On November 26, 1956, Ellery staged a protest against the school requirement that each student read 10 Bible passages and the Lord's Prayer each day during homeroom. Instead, Ellery brought a copy of the Qur'an and read from that. For this, he was sent to the Principal's office. With the help of his father, Edward Schempp, and the American Civil Liberties Union, they sued the Abington School district over their policy of mandatory Bible readings.

Over several years, Ellery, his father, and later his younger siblings Roger and Donna continued to fight this policy in the courts. The Schempps were Unitarian Universalists, a theologically liberal religious community. The case was eventually decided in Ellery's favor by the Supreme Court in 1963, five years after he had graduated from high school.

I listen to far too many call in shows on the radio to know that is factual.

I am beginning to think football (american) fans have a leading edge on TV viewing habits.

If there's no interesting topic on Washington Journal, I switch over the Mike and Mike on ESPN2.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. He's less famous than the O'Hair's but it was his name on the case and unlike Bill Murray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._Murray) Ellery Schempp remains a UU and didn't get all fundy.

RADIO CALL IN SHOWS???? That's your evidence? Boy howdy are you messed up, man. Radio call in show callers aren't even actors, they're Turin machines.

Go read Baseless claims quarterly issue 26, page 13 then come back and discuss.

Turin machines? You mean devices that produce holy shrouds? Or were you referring to Turing, a homosexual, machines?

2. I disagree with Schemp

3. You mean S(c)hemp is a real name?!?!?

Well, it's against my religion to agree with Shemp, or any homophone (as opposed to homosexual), so #1 is out. I'll go #3. What do I win?

OK, I'm finally making my first post, but I had to.

Hi, my name is Kim, and I am a C-span BookTV addict.

Shemp = one of the Stooges and one of the funniest members of JREF forums.
Schempp = one of the most important figures in church/state litigation in the last 50 years.

Turin, a homosexual, machine.

Turin, aka Torino, is a city in Italy (or a Ford make). A Turing machine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_machine), created by a homosexual, would be programmed to know it should mispell it's appellation in order to throw people off.

Yay!!! Did you happen to see the Ellery Schempp segment in question and if not, have you seen any recently that you really enjoyed?

I work nights and sleep days on weekends so I can only catch the morning and evening offerings and whatever airs between the time I wake up Monday morning and 7am CST. Still I've been very lucky to catch some awesome appearances.
