Suppose you're walking down the street on a lovely Saturday afternoon and on a corner you see some young men holding home-made signs and shouting slogans.
Curious, as to what they're on about, you get close enough to read what's on their signs:
"We've got the cure for cancer!"
Amazed by this claim, you walk up to one of them and ask: "so how'd you find it?"
He answers: "We watched a movie on the internet made by an auto mechanic and read a paper written by a guy who builds model railroads. They figured it all out!"
This obviously strikes you as a bit bizarre, so you ask: "But how do you know they're right?"
"Because they started their own on-line magazine, where they asked their friends to review their conclusions and were told that they were 100% correct!"
You can't help but ask the obvious question: What do scientists and doctors think of this?
"They're all being paid off to ignore our research."
Now truthers....if this happened to you, what would be your reaction? Would you think...
a) Hurray! No more cancer!
or b) Well these guys are obviously full of crap because if they had the cure for cancer they probably wouldn't be standing on a street corner with signs or getting their pals to review their work!
If you answer A, then I give you full marks for at least being consistent.
If you answer B, then hopefully you're one step closer to understanding why so few people take you seriously.
