View Full Version : 2007 Stundie Of They Year: Maybe A Prize?

The eagerly anticipated 2007 Stundie of the Year competition will be starting soon, and it occurred to me that it might add a little spice to offer an actual prize.

So, in that vein, I propose to personally donate $50 to JREF in the name of the 2007 Stundie of the Year winner, as this person will have shown themselves to be the most desperately in need of the training in skepticism and critical thinking that the JREF provides.

Thoughts?

Thats incredibly generous of you, and how fitting that it should go to the JREF, which is the kind of organization that the 9/11 Deniers need!

I'll put in $40, the JREF is a good cause although I am pretty poor!

The problem is, that $90 is most likely to indirectly go to the likes of Alex Jones, as the SoY winner buys another DVD or book.

i think you missed something, they are donating money to the JREF in the name of the SoY winner, not giving it to the winner

....unless im missing something

Right. My bad, missed a couple of strategically important words there...

I'm in for €20, if someone tells me how to donate in another person's name. If not, I'll give that on my own in honor of Stundie candidates everywhere.

Heh. Crazy idea. I like it. ;)

I'm in a bad financial situation at the moment, stuck between cities and unemployed, but if I get some paid work in the next few weeks I'll chuck in AU$20. It doesn't seem likely though.

Put me down for $25. (Which by the time the announcement is made will probably be worth about 5 Euros. It's a damned conspiracy, I say!)

I think it would be shame not to have an actual prize that can be presented to the winner. It doesn't have to be money. How about a copy of Michael Shermer's 'Why People Believe Weird Things' or something similarly educational. 'Congratulations, and here's your prize - we're going to donate money to JREF' just seems a bit lame.

The main difficulty of course is getting the book to them. But then most actors won't turn up to accept their Razzie.

Maybe we can transmit the prize to the winner by space beam.

Perhaps someone could create a virtual "plaque" (extra special joke for anyone who followed Stundie at SLC) with the winner's name on it and uploaded to a special stundie award website to remain forevermore.

If we were to give them an actual prize, I think a giant Hershey's Kiss would be appropriate since it looks like a tinfoil hat and probably couldn't be used to buy anything from the Alex Jones store.

its no different than getting "A donation has been made in your name to such and such" certificate for christmas, lol

although sending them a book would likely generate more stundies as they try to "debunk" it, or post a video of them tearing it up on youtube, lol

Isn't it quite possible that we wouldn't have the real-world name/ address of the winner? I think the announcement would be good enough, with "a donation has been made..." etc. See that all the time.

Oliver was pretty good at creating stuff like that. Remember those virtual badges for people who were banned at LCF? Shame he's not around anymore.

I like the idea of a virtual award that looks different to the normal award. Anybody up to design it?

I think donating the money to the JREF would be the best course of action. Sending the winner an actual prize would require us to actually know who they are.

I was thinking of getting him or her a nice RFID chip.

Hmmm... what to get for the Truther who has it all?

A Cluebat?
A Great Big Bowl Of Wrong?
Some New Socks?
Some Ron Paul Drink Coasters?
An Authentic Mayan Calendar Personally Signed By Jesus Christ Himself?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner surely. Does somebody want to design a 'cluebat' for use as the yearly award? I would, but my graphic design ability is, shall we say, as real as the plane that hit the Pentagon (Mwahahahaha...)

Sadly, at the moment, I'm not in a position to contribute monetarilly (unless twoofer bucks count...I can print lots of those) because my kitty, who bears a striking resemblance to NWO Kitty needed surgery. I do, however, know a place where I could purchase a "Jackass of the Year" award medal to pin on the quoter of the best stundie...:p

Disclaimer: Any therm*te, explosives, laser beams or other destructive substances contained in said medal are not the responsiblity of this author or sane JREFers in general.

Sounds good to me.

Hey, wait, you're hotlinking from my server! Glare glare!

That's probably going to cost me, let's see, 430 views of a 13KB file, carry the twelve... About a twentieth of a cent!

Sorry about that. I don't understand all this new fangled web stuff. So pasting a URL with img tags around it is bad?

PixyMisa
12th January 2008, 06:24 AM
In this case, I'm just kidding. :) I do about 2.5TB of traffic a month and that image used maybe 5MB.

But in general it's a bad idea. It's called "hotlinking" and it's frowned upon, unless the site specifically says you can do that, because it means that one web site is stealing bandwidth from another. Some sites actively prevent it, so that you get an image like what TheRedWorm posted.

OK.

I'm still not sure what all that means. I should go ask the folks in the approprite forum I guess, but I'm pretty sure the answers would be meaningless to me. I can't tell the difference between a web and a series of tubes...

Think of it as a series of file cabinets, you're currently reading the forums.randi.org file cabinet, but the picture you inserted is stored in the cotillion.mu.nu file cabinet. Every time someone has to access the file cabinet to look at a page, or a picture or anything, it costs the person who owns that file cabinet an amount depending on the size of what you're looking at.

There are sites such as http://xs.to which are designed so you can save the image from another site and upload it to theirs. This way it still costs them when someone accesses their file cabinet but they grant you permission to do so.

Hopefully not a terrible explanation.

I'm sure it makes sense, but I just can't be bothered trying to learn all this stuff at my age. For me it's a bit like driving a car, I enjoy it and the scenery etc is nice, but I don't really care about cylinders and diffs and fanbelts and things. I'll try to avoid hotlinking and think of it as one of those things under the bonnet (hood) of my car which I ignore at my peril, like, um, that bit with the thing that sticks up...

Done.:D I put this together over the weekend. I still need to come up with a good woodgrain texture for the plaque.

Almost perfect!

The only comment I have is that it shouldn't be a "Genuine JREF Cluebat", as Teh Stundies are not representative of the JREF, nor of the administration of the JREF forums.

I do like the, "Genuine [something] Cluebat" idea and font though - perhaps a "Genuine Gravy Cluebat"?

Other than that, absolutely beautiful...I cracked up laughing when I saw it. Thanks!

Thanks. The Louisville Slugger bats have the "Geniune Louisville Slugger" on them so that's why I put it on there. I thought about putting Gravy's name instead of JREF but I didn't want to limit it to one person.

I rerendered the pic with a wood texture. I also corrected the green color cast which was caused by the HDR light probe I was using. And I used Rosie O'Donell's stupid quote as an example.

Good suggestion. If we don't want to single out one person (i.e. Gravy) then I think that "Genuine NWO Cluebat" is the way to go. Understand that it's not that I don't like the design with 'JREF' on the bat, it's that Teh Stundies are not associated with the James Randi Educational Foundation, and are not endorsed by the JREF or the administrators of the JREF forums.
