But, a thread on it showed up arounnd 10 hours ago: A) probably messed up if not a lie and B) source gives no actual details or real data that can be searched.

This story reeks of urban myth. While I suppose the chances are not so remote this could occur, that "a peer told the House of Lords" while interested in a related political issue just makes it sound like someone repeating the usual claim, "I know someone who knows someone this happened to".

What do you mean, "you have..."? I don't see that aben even posted in the other thread.

I vote urban myth too. In particular I'm suspicious of the fact that there's not a single word in the story about who discovered (and how they found out) they were brother and sister.
Probably another example of lazy reporting by news media with too much time and too little news- willing to publish anything as long as they can point the finger as someone else when it's found out to be fiction.

The thread I am noting there was the original thread. aben had posted two threads, this and another with a slightly varient title two minutes apart.

What's really terrible is that tv news is reporting it as if it was real - with no known fact checking!!!

The story seems to be a bit of a stretch but I wouldn't ignore the possibility entirely. I was given up for adoption as an infant but hooked up with my biological family back in 2001. It turns out that my biological brothers and sisters all grew up in the town just next to where I was raised. We lived only twenty minutes apart. Now if the couple in the story grew up in a small town, or lived next to each other, then I could see it happening...

Technically, I agree that the story is not that big a stretch - and anecdotally, it is possible to come up with stories similar in type (though in most, the data was provided before it became a problem). The problem is the whole set up, not just the basic story, appears a bit too good and well timed to be true.
