Well this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7193161.stm) seems pretty fascinating.

Just thought I'd share. :)

I hate that type of false dramatization in the story: "So large it can be seen in satellite photos."

Well, hell. The small hedge in my front yard can be seen in satellite photos.

From the picture, the palm tree looks dwarfed by the other trees behind it. The point of the story is what happens after flowering. What's the point of saying you can see it from space, besides associating it with the size of the Great Wall of China?

Florida has some pretty big pam trees growing there, too. Of course, they don't curl up and die after they get cocoanuts.

Yes. It says far more about satellite technology than it does about the size of the tree.

There's an ash tree in my front yard I can see on Google Earth. It isn't big, as far as trees go, by any stretch of the imagination.

As far as the trees go, I had Yucca[sp?] plants in my backyard that would produce asparagus looking things that grew to about twice the height of the plant and would flower. The plants didn't die though.
