View Full Version : I'm Interviewed on The Paracast Jan 20th

Last week I did a phone interview regarding the Stop Sylvia site for the hosts of The Paracast (http://www.theparacast.com), a podcast normally devoted to paranormal topics (primarily UFOs, I believe).

The hosts were very much on my side regarding Browne, and I thought the two-hour interview went reasonably well.

There was one point where one of the hosts was talking smack about James Randi, and I tried to express my respect for Randi without dragging us into too much of a tangent. Perhaps I should have been more vocal. We'll see.

Another point which I perhaps could have handled differently was when one of the hosts mentioned Gary Scwartz's expeirments. I decided to simply bite my tongue rather than drag the conversation into a discussion of the merits of Scwartz's work. But again, perhaps I should have.

The interview is supposed to be streamed on their site on January 20th, and should be available for downloading later that day.

What was he doing derailing his own Interview? If it was about your site and Sylvia then James and Gary should not have even been mentioned. I assume neither of them are on your site?

Another nail in the coffin.

The interview is up and can be downloaded from their site (www.theparacast.com).

Scroll down to "Eipsode downloads", then right-click on "Jan 20 08", and select "Save as".

It's a two-hour interview, but I don't think there's much on it that this crowd hasn't already heard.

The download is on this page http://theparacast.com/paracast.xml. I must warn everyone the download is 41.2 MB.
Might listen to it tomorrow.

Any highlights or lowlights?

You and your hosts Gene and David deserve a big round of applause.

Any highlights or lowlights?I'll let you decide that. The two things I mentioned in the OP, I still wish I had handled differently. Other than that, it seemed fine.

I'm listening to it right now. :) Really good interview.

You and your hosts Gene and David deserve a big round of applause. Thanks, Eeney.

It wasn't available from Itunes for me earlier today but now I have it. I'll listen tomorrow. Congrats in advance!
For the most part I find Gene and David level-headed but sometimes not so much so. Maybe they don't know about Gary Swartz's "work." Well, I am certain I'll enjoy the interview anyway. Hopefully it will bring more people to SSB.

The correct spelling of the name is Gary Schwartz (thanks to Google). One option is to send them some information about this person. I doubt if you could have said anything then that would have improved things. You were in a no win situation. Only listened to the first 51 minutes worth. This part is very good.

I am thinking of the time after Sylvia Browne has retired. Can someone replace her? I mean if someone tries someone like you can start a www.stop<whoever>.com (http://www.stop<whoever>.com). You have damaged the reputations of two bad people by this method. Or is this something that is very difficult to do? Or does it require a special type of person that is very rare?

I think the interview is so good, you should find a place for it on your site. Maybe a link to it, at the very least? I thought it was very cool that you mentioned me a few times, even if it wasn't by name.

When was the incident when you were rumored to be on? :) I know that they did cancel at least one taping in January of last year but I didn't know about that...

One observation: David Biedny does not know how to pronounce his own name. The syllable breakdown is Bie-dny, with the accent on the first syllable.

Can I second this? Have a separate links page to all your interviewees. If interviews are removed after some time ask permission to copy them to your site.

Anyone listening to them will know then that you are a human being and not some auto bot. Plus they are another nail in the coffin.

It was when you had announced here on this forum that you were going to a taping on a specific date, and all sorts of people were encouraging you to invite me along.

That was an excellent interview, Robert. Great job!

Regarding your doubts in the OP, I think you did precisely the right thing in biting your tongue in those instances. (I was doing it along with you whilst listening). Bearing in mind it was primarily a "woo" podcast there would have been little gained in derailing your own message or antagonising the hosts. I'd be very surprised if you aren't asked to do a follow up interview at some point - maybe you could widen the scope a little then ;)

Kudos to the hosts too for a) interviewing a skeptic and b) promoting the StopSylviaBrowne site so effectively.

Arthur

Then I have to tell you that I didn't notice anything like what you described when I attended on that date. As far as I remember, it was a taping like any other; for instance, I wasn't even asked for ID.

Great interview, Robert! You seem to have a natural talent for this sort of thing. And I don't see how you could have possibly handled the segment on James Randi any differently. It came across very clearly that you regard James Randi and his accomplishments more highly than you were able to say, all the while you managed to say some very great things about him and what he has done without offending the hosts. That was actually very well done, I thought! The context of this particular show just has to be taken into account. Same with Gary Schwartz - It wouldn't have made any difference had you said anything at that point, IMO would only serve to antagonize the hosts and probably also the listeners, which would have defeated the whole purpose of being on the show. I'm impressed these particular hosts are so against Sylvia Browne! That means the truth is becoming evident even to those who would pre-SSB possibly have tended to side with her. I thought it impressive that both you and the hosts were able to maintain your differing positions on the validity of the paranormal while managing to present the evidence against Sylvia Browne as a united front. Way to go!!!
