I need suggestions for a snappy comeback for when one is accused of not being 'open minded,' with regard to 'psychic' poopie and other woo. TIA.:boxedin:

Just say there is a difference between being open minded and being gullible.

One I've heard Michael Shermer (and others) use is "not to be so open minded that your brains fall out".

Choosing not to believe is just as open-minded as choosing to believe. The wooist is basically forcing you to close your mind to only one possibility.

Not very snappy, I guess.

I don't suppose, "Oh go F off" would do, eh?

Hee hee hee...as much fun as that would be, it would be inadvisable if I hope to get along with these nice ladies in the future.

A ha, babes. New information. May I refine my exhortation in light of this new data:
"Oh, let's go F off together" :)

In that case how about, "Oh, I'm very open minded - how open minded are you?". If you can say it with a twinkle in your eye, so much the better.

I encountered this somewhere...

"The mind is like a mouth- it needs to be opened temporarily, and then close onto something substantial."

You could try to find a brand of woo that they poopoo, and poopoo their poopoo.

By which I mean, ask them why they aren't open-minded to X thing when there's just as much (or as little) evidence for it.

The purpose of an intelligent mind is to close it.(if you never came to any conclusions you may as well not be sentient)

It's preferable not to be so open-minded the brain falls out.

You might engage the accuser in a dialogue over whether they believe an open mind is automatically a good thing... and whether they can name any examples of open-mindedness being a bad thing.

But if you want a comeback so snappy that it will jolt them out of their willful ignorance and decisively nudge them toward a new life in skepticism, some disappointment likely awaits you.

I can't remember the exact phrasing but Joe Nickell says something like:
An open mind is important to good investigation but not open like a garbage can.

Ask them how open minded they are to the possibility that their beliefs are sour owl poop. Then, while they're thinking about the "sour owl poop", kick them really hard in the shins.

That's it! Confuse them with esoteric references to architectural history.

Then, while they're going "Huh?", punch them in the stomach and take their wallet!

"It may be open-minded to consider the possibility these ideas are true, but it is much more open-minded to also consider the possibility these ideas are false. I speak up because your mind seems closed to that possibility."

If a polite reply is called for, blend some of the above, then smile and say:
"But I am open to the possibility that (insert woo here) is true, the current evidence doesn't support it yet. Are you open to the possibility that (insert woo here) isn't true?"

You could argue that they are being closed minded, meaning they are not open minded enough to accept what evidence we have contrary to their belief, and what absence of evidence they have towards theirs. Or, you could tell them their mothers dress them funny.

Expect anything you say to be ignored, so you may feel good, but that is about it. Remember they think they have an open mind however it is firmly closed.

Try this:

It’s not closed minded to reject claims that make no sense.

Snappy enough?

You could add:

...if you accept a claim that makes no sense, and for which there is no evidence, then you are the closed-minded one.

Or in more detail: The appeal to be open-minded (http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2005/10/the_appeal_to_b.html)

I got it, the quote I put here is by G.K. Chesterton: "The purpose of the mind, as of the mouth, is to open it in order to close it on something substantial."

Paraphrase to desired level of snappiness.
