View Full Version : Sylvia Browne - Ghost in the TV

On the Jan 16 2008 Montel show, a woman told a story of her son (or nephew, I forget which) playing video games in her basement when the lights went out. He used the light frmo his cell phone to find the breaker box.
Later, he found he had accidentally taken a photo of the television screen in the dark, and, lo and behold, there was a spooky picture of a little boy (see below). He showed it to her several days later.
Browne confirmed it was a ghost, gave the boy's name, and said he had died from a fall. His mother also haunted the house.
The picture of the boy on the TV screen looks very much like something from a morror movie or video game, and I was wondering if anyone here could identify it as such. Is it fram The Ring? The Grudge? From a video game made from one of these?
Just a shot. If we can identify it, it will make for a good SSB article.

I've seen this and can't remember! I'll look through my horror DVDs and see if I can find the still.
Edit: Off the top of my head, I think it's The Grudge II, the American remake. Mind you, so many movies have been made using the corpse on the tv screen gag it hard to remember them all.

It's definitely one of the fleeting, in camera effects shock shots that originated with the Asia Extreme horror movies. It was a good SFX in the beginning when Ju-on came out, but now it's cliché.

Yeah, no kidding. It's now in every stripe of horror film from remakes of Asian horror flicks to The Sixth Sense knockoffs to slasher flicks to Dead Teenager Movies.
I'm betting it's an American film because you never see Asian movies regularly shown on TV, even on cable.

Could it be the kid from The Devil's Backbone? I didn't get all the way through that movie and I don't remember it very well, but that's the first thing that I thought of.

Good one! I don't have the Grudge II, but I have that one on DVD. Let me look.
Eeney: A lot of these horror flicks are on Sundance and IFC. Sundance has Asia Extreme on Sunday nights at midnight. In fact, look at the flash promo (http://www.sundancechannel.com/asiaextreme/).

If we're looking at games I'd guess Resident Evil or Dead Rising, but then again what was on the screen just before it went off may have looked more human than it does in that picture.

Oh, allright...I actually really enjoyed the original Japanese version of Dark Water and I remember that being on cable once.
Based on the Caucasian actor, I still think we can narrow it down to an American film made in the last 3 or 4 years, though. If it is a film, that is.

This should be Google's next project. A search engine that searches for other images that are similar to the one you upload into the search engine.
That way you just upload the picture, and google comes back with all these pictures that either are identical, or have very similar qualities.

It was nice of the ghost boy to bring some haunted background scenery with him...

I can tell you now that it's not the Ring or the Ring II. Both of those movies had a ghost girl with long hair that was frequently obscuring her face. I haven't seen the Japanese version of either, however I'd imagine it's the same.
The Grudge is a possibility, but I doubt it. Both of those in both the Japanese and American versions had a little boy as one of the ghostly characters, but in both he was asian, doesn't really look like the cat in the still there to me.
The Devil's Backbone...never seen it, but it looks similar. If we could make out the background it'd be easier to identify the movie, if it was a movie. Could be a photoshopped picture burned to a DVD and put on the TV for all I know.

I can almost guarantee it's not from The Devil's Backbone. Looks similar to the ghost kid in that movie, but it's definitely not him. (And if you haven't seen that movie, do yourself a favor and rent it some time.)

I cannot duplicate the image using my hypothesis. However the image is rather odd. If the TV was on, even for a video game where is the rest of the picture? If it was an accidental picture I would expect the TV to be only part of the picture. The rest of the image would be the TV and some of the room.
This indicates that the image has been manipulated. What we need is the original image. Anything else is just a wild guess.

I am sure this is from The Ring 2... the boy in the story was suffering from an incurable disease... he had nosebleeds through the entire film. At the end he decides to volunteer to join the girl to end her curse. After that his image appears with her on all the tapes...IIRC.
Also with the lights out, the camera could have captured the last few seconds of the screens after image due to the power failure... my screen glows for quite a few seconds when I turn it off while watching in the dark.
But if I was a betting man I would probably put money on Hoax.

20th January 2008, 03:58 AM
It's not the boy from the Grudge - his face was much rounder, and I believe he stayed more or less centre screen, and was filmed from further back.
The angle etc reminds me more of a music video. Someone like the Cranberries, Sinead O'Connor, or Muse maybe.
Is there a bigger version online anywhere to allow us to look at some of the details? There's a little box to the right, and some stuff at the top of the screen. I would guess this could be a near impossible search, however, as it could cover anything from films games and music vids to home vids and advertisements.

I don't suppose it occurred to the mother/aunt to search the archives of her local newspaper for a report of a child being killed in a fall? If the accident happened in the woman's home and Sylvia gave her the boy's name she might have had a good chance of verifying the story.

People are overlooking one thing- the scan line at the top of the screen. (that white line through the boy's hair) When you take a photo of a TV screen and use a slow shutter speed, you get scan lines. That shows the TV was on and the picture was part of TV transmission and not a reflection.
Robert, the scan line itself will negate the statement given by the woman.

Could very well be. It follows the curve of the screen. It's apparent this is a CRT tv and not a flat panel.

I don't suppose it occurred to the mother/aunt to search the archives of her local newspaper for a report of a child being killed in a fall?It was Browne who mentioned the fall. Perhaps the woman has done so since the taping.

It looks like overlighted Milla Jovovich, could colours be somewhat wrong? Background seems like castle wall or graveyard..I don't think there's enough of a background to tell. It's a screen capture of a digital capture of a video of an image from a phone camera... It is quite possible that the "brick design" you are seeing is a result of pixellation/artifacts added at any/all of the opints where the image was copied.

Robert, the scan line itself will negate the statement given by the woman.I had noticed that, and if an article cmoes of this I will point it out.
But as chillzero says, Brownians will simply argue that the "ghost" was using the technology available, which would account for it.
Yup, and that means its not phosphor glow either - the TV was running.Yes, or that the energy used by the ghost to create the image, being limited by the technology of the television, caused the same effect.

I could very well be mistaken... mixing up the plots from a few movies. I know for certain the boy was getting nose-bleeds. When I asked my brother this morning and my girlfriend tonight what the image was from they both rattled off The Ring 2 right away. It may also be an image from the dvd extras... a deleted scene or alternate ending... even an easter egg.
I have tuesday off so if no one has it found it by then I will do a search on the web and my neighbours movie collection.

Someone should connect a live camcorder to a monitor in a dark room and see if they approach recreating this image.
Perhaps various effects/filters were used (would be needed) (before and/or after the film process, of course).

I assume the boy's claim is that the TV (power) was off when the picture was taken. Either way, it's true believers will just say power is unnecessary and ghosts have mysterious means of making TVs turn on/off, etc. SB has long held that ghosts can mysteriously affect elecrticity (blinking lights, turning appliances on and off, etc). A few minor flaws in the story anyway that believers might want to consider: Is it really likely that a boy would wait several days to show his mother a picture as bizarre as this? (Wouldn't you think he'd have been showing everyone he knew within hours?) Why would the cell phone just happen to take such a well centered picture of the TV accidentally?! And would anyone actually believe a ghost inserting itself into a TV would be accompanied by a background scene?? If that's snow back there, does he live in an area where it even snows?

I love the idea of ghosts using the technology available...yet talking through SB...one would think that if they can project themselves into the TV screen, they'd figure out how to haund a cell phone and skip SB as the Middle-torll.

More simple than that. Just take a picture of any CRT tv showing any Asia Extreme horror flick with a cheap digital camera. Take the snap when the in-camera SFX come on. You'll get the same thing.
I'm tempted to take a snap of the Jerry Springer Show and somehow get it on Sylvia Browne Wednesday. I wonder what story she'd make up about it.

A little Photoshopping on the image.:( So I'm not an expert. May help to give an idea what the whole face looks like. Seems to me like the scan lines through the eye area are from the original TV image of the kid, not from the TV showing FOX. The bright line at the top is not necessarily an artifact of the TV image in my opinion.

I sincerely doubt that it's Empire of the Sun but if it were, the only scene I can think of that it could possibly be from is the dropping of the atomic bomb (and that's a very long shot).

Well, since you asked- :D
In Golden Age of Hollywood actors, I've sort of had a crush on Jimmy Stewart since I was 13 years old. Everytime I see him in one of his earlier movies, such as Destry Rides Again...wow.
If the British royals count as celebrities, then I have to confess that I find both Princes absolutely adorable. :o
Let me see...Hugh Jackman, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Viggo Mortensen and I hate to admit it but Orlando Bloom :p. And this might sound funny but when I saw Darjeeling Limited, it really made an impression on me how unconventionally good looking Adrien Brody is.

I'll agree on Hugh Jackman and Jonathan Rhys Meyers - sexy devils both :). I'm kind of divided about Orlando Bloom, he sort of annoys me :) but it's hard to say that he's ugly. I agree on Adrien Brody too.
Though I guess it is mostly JRM and Bloom that are pretty boys, as in younger and with a certain androgynity to them, the others are too manly to be pretty boys, I guess :p (except the princes who comes off more as mama's boys than pretty boys to me :p)

LORI (FEELS A PRESENCE IN HER BASEMENT AND IN HER HOUSE)
My brother-in-law was in the basement playing a game on the TV, and the lights went out. So he used his cell phone light to find the switchbox to turn the power back on. And as he was doing that, he held the button down too long and it took a picture of the TV. He showed it to me, like, two days later, and it was a picture of this boy. When I looked at the picture and seen this little boy, it actually gave me chills, like, through my whole body. After David took the picture of the boy in the basement, I was down there doing laundry and I'm folding clothes out of the drier, and I heard a noise in my ear that sounded like gibberish, like someone talking to me just really fast.
LORI (FEELS A PRESENCE IN HER BASEMENT AND IN HER HOUSE)
I have three dogs. My littlest one is a little Yorkshire terrier. All of a sudden, he just jumped up and he'll start growling and he'll get the defensive bark, where he feels like he's in danger. I want Sylvia to tell me, if she can, why the boy is still in my home. And if he's not at rest, I'd like to be able to put him to rest.

MONTEL WILLIAMS (HOST)
Wow. Lori, please welcome Lori to the show.

MONTEL WILLIAMS (HOST)
What did you wanna ask Sylvia?
LORI (FEELS A PRESENCE IN HER BASEMENT AND IN HER HOUSE)
Well, you know, it's really weird, 'cause this boy's not the only spirit in my house. I mean, there's many of them. I've had many experiences. My dogs have seen many things. I mean...
SYLVIA BROWNE (BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND WORLD RENOWNED PSYCHIC)
Yeah, but I think you only have a woman and this little boy by the name of Gerald. So you don't have many, many. You have a woman and a little boy.
LORI (FEELS A PRESENCE IN HER BASEMENT AND IN HER HOUSE)
And a little boy.
SYLVIA BROWNE (BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND WORLD RENOWNED PSYCHIC)
Yeah.
LORI (FEELS A PRESENCE IN HER BASEMENT AND IN HER HOUSE)
I wanna know why he's there and how I can get rid of him.
SYLVIA BROWNE (BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND WORLD RENOWNED PSYCHIC)
Well, you know, because he died there. He fell down. I don't know-steps or something and, you know, died. The mother's name is Martha, and she's around a lot.
MONTEL WILLIAMS (HOST)
When she says died there, it doesn't mean in your current property. It doesn't mean the house that...
SYLVIA BROWNE (BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND WORLD RENOWNED PSYCHIC)
No, it means on the property that was there.
MONTEL WILLIAMS (HOST)
Yeah, right. So she wants to know how can she make him go home and what she should do. Send them home...
SYLVIA BROWNE (BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND WORLD RENOWNED PSYCHIC)
Well, I would take Gerald and Martha and say, you're dead, go home.
LORI (FEELS A PRESENCE IN HER BASEMENT AND IN HER HOUSE)
I've tried that. They don't seem to wanna leave.
SYLVIA BROWNE (BEST SELLING AUTHOR AND WORLD RENOWNED PSYCHIC)
Well, then I'd put salt around your house. Go through your house with a crucifix, holy water, bless the house and say, please go to God.

He just gave her an out if the owner happens to go back and look up the history of the house. What a team.

Okay I'm a little late to the party (as usual! hehe) but I think it is from Resident Evil: Apocalypse (http://www.moviecitynews.com/arrays/resident_evil_photos2.htm)
I think the image is taken from the scene in this screenshot (sorry I only have screenshots to work with):
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/jigsaw_psyche/38_mid.jpg
full size and full image (http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/jigsaw_psyche/38.jpg)
If you orient the Montel screenshot to be the same as the screenshot (alright almost the same) , you can see the wood in the top right. Also I think the "boys" 'ear' is not actually his ear, but the remains of the woman's fingers - you can see some hair left on the montel shot that are between her fingers.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d108/jigsaw_psyche/montel20080116_ghost.png
I do not know why the image is different...I have never taken a picture on a phone from TV before..also it could be that it was deliberately altered?
Sorry I am crap with graphics (if you couldn't tell lol) - I would have layered them if I knew how! :)

It's a good guess but I don't think it's a match... Here it is animated, you can see the nostril shifts and other parts don't quite match up.

I found this exceedingly cruel. The father knowingly set his son up for that and then continued to laugh when the boy was upset.
Regarding the photo: I don't think it's the Milla Jovovich pic, either.

But I don't think JP was saying it was from this one still, but from the scene that the still is from. Does the woman later stand up and have sunken eyes?

Hey, no problem... If you ever need some help with graphics for your sites just let me know. If anyone has access to this DVD, could you review this scene? If you can post a still from it we can make another overlay. I'd really like to see this solved so we can paste the link in the YouTube video. Thanks!

Yes, I am not sayin this is the exact picture, but I think it is from this scene. I don't have the DVD so I can't check it carefully. The reason I don't think it is an exact picture as seen in a movie (the ghost boy) is because it could be recognised too easily if that was the case. I think something happened with the camera phone which caused it to come out funky,or it was deliberately altered.
@RSLancastr: As for the sunken eyes, the darker areas of make-up around the eyes can account for the look, or an alteration also.

Thanks for your help kosai I appreciate it :)
If I'm way off I apologise for wasting everyones time...but I thought what game would a boy be playing? I just kept thinking resident evil, and then I found out there were movies of the same, so that is where I focussed my attention. I never thought it was a 'direct shot' from a movie though.... the image looks too manipulated for that.
Thanks

Which version? This is yet another Asian Extreme film remade by Americans lately. The American version is on Starz Edge this month and it airs daily. Here is the schedule (http://www.starz.com/appmanager/seg/s?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=movie_detail&vid=4199562&eid=-1§ion=SCHEDULE). I don't subscribe to Starz, but perhaps someone else here does.

From the Montel transcript:
"My dogs have seen many things."
"Well, I would take Gerald and Martha and say, you're dead, go home."
[Mustn't swear, mustn't swear] Josephus H. Chrysler.
I mean... I just... how do people... GAH!
(Sorry, that wasn't particularly helpful.)
I asked my boyfriend (an avid horror movie watcher) and he said that it sort of reminded him of the Saw movies. Unfortunately, I will never watch any of those, so I can't help in that respect, but maybe others have seen them and can comment?
You are doing valuable work RSL. This stupidity MUST end.

I really don't think it's any of the SAW movies, having seen them all, and watched 2 of them again recently. The only shots in Saw like that are of Jigsaw's little puppet, which appears on monitors to tell people how to play the game - but it doesn't look like that at all - it has a big nose, nad red circles on it's cheeks. Any times Jigsaw is watching people on monitors, the rooms around them are really dark, and none of the characters look like this either.

The face of the boy in RSLancastr's OP really reminds me of Elliott from ET! He was played by Henry Thomas - could it be from another of his films, or an altered image from ET even?
(Or is it just me who sees the resemblance?!)
