Who here remembers Pat Paulson, 6-time presidential candidate?

I was reading his entry on Wikipedia and read this line:

He died of complications from colon and brain cancer and pneumonia in Tijuana, Mexico, April 25, 1997.

Does anyone know if he died while visiting an alternative cancer center in Tijuana?

P.S. I can't post links yet.

Yes, that is what I recall.

In his later years he had a winery in upstate NY, and his wines were really rather good.

I remember his run in '68; I wasn't aware that he campaigned after that. I'm sorry to hear that he died. He was a funny guy on the Smothers Brothers, with deadpan humor that continued the Buster Keaton tradition (& seemed to have been picked up by Bob Newhart).

What I mostly remember about him is his campaigns for president while he was on The Smothers Brothers show. The subsequent ones didn't generate much buzz. He really was one of the funniest deadpan comedians I'd ever seen, and he never dropped out of character. Modern political comic personalities like Stephen Colbert have riffed off his work.

Sure. Pat was a hoot when he ran as the candidate for the Straight Talkin' American Government party better known as the STAG Party. Funny guy.

At the suggestion of Tom Smothers, Paulsen announced his candidacy for the presidency, in late-1967, explaining that he was motivated to seek the office because "it has a good pension plan". Paulsen's campaign, which inspired 200,000 write-in votes, resulted in his winning an Emmy award in 1968.

Definitely remember Pat Paulsen. He was really funny.

But I don't think Bob Newhart ripped him off since Newhart's first comedy album was released in 1960 and he had a variety show on TV in 1961.

Why is this in "Science," BTW?

For the same reason that the death of Heath Ledger is the biggest news item on CNN right now? Like -- collective insanity?

If John Kerry and him were side by side, could they have passed for brothers? Ruth Buzzi could have been the sister.

I should: I'm his son. Nice to know that he still incites conversation. I was doing some research on Dad for a documentary we are making, and came cross this site. I don't normally pay much attention to commentary on Dad, since most of it is misguided or incorrect, but you folks seem to have it essentially right, and since I'm a Randi fan from way back, I made an exception.

To set a few things straight: The winery was in Sonoma County, near Napa. We don't own it anymore - long since sold. Colbert is definitely in the lineage, whether he admits it or not. and yes, Dad died in Mexico while seeking alternative treatment; the us doctors had given up on him. Our Tijuana doctor had some crazy therapy involving shark cell infusions, which seemed strange to me, but my sister believes in it, and it gave Dad hope, so I guess it was worth it.

Carry on the skepticism. Dad would have loved it. We are still trying to wage a write-in candidacy for President this year, and given the current field, we think he shows more life than any of them. Probably less controversy, too.

I came into this thread by accident. I saw the name Pat Paulsen, and remembered him fondly from the Smothers Brothers, and his presidential bids.

Monte - It's great to have you here! Your Dad was awesome! His funny, deadpan delivery was hilarious. I didn't even know he was gone until just now. Please let us know when the documentary is done. I would love to see it. Take care!

You're dad was one of the reasons I started writing comedy. Bless him.

And he's not kidding, there's a groundswell of support for Paulsen in '08 (http://www.paulsen.com/pat/) and more and more it's looking like he'll get my vote.

I live in Michigan. There is a certain chance that the Democratic primary will feature a "do-over", since the first one got so messed up. If it happens, it will probably be a caucus instead of a primary, for logistical reasons. However, some "caucuses" are run just like primaries, in which you go in, cast a ballot, and walk out.

I can't see voting for Pat in the general election, but if they do a "do-over" vote in the Michigan Democratic nomination process, a vote for Paulsen would just feel right.

(1968 was the first presidential election I can remember, and I was too young to really understand it (6 years old), but I remember watching TV the night that he declared his candidacy, and I knew that it was a way of making fun of those other comedians, with names like Nixon, Humphrey, and Wallace.

That sounds a bit closer to reality. Because I know that your dad started out from the wet coast (okay, at a very young age).

For my 25th birthday my dear hubby got tickets to see your dad at the local comedy club, Giggles. (http://www.gigglescomedyclub.com/) That was back in the day when wine coolers were popular (and so were scary shoulder pads for women!). One of his "local" jokes was that his family was poor and his pet was a geoduck (http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/shelfish/beachreg/2clam.htm). So sad pulling a long necked clam on a leash, clunk, clunk, clunk.

It was wonderful to see your dad in that small cozy club. The only downside were the wine coolers.

My mom would make TV dinners and we'd watch your dad on Smothers Brothers. I was only 9 in 1968 but I thought if your dad could run for president, then maybe I could too! Are the Smothers Brothers helping with your film project? Thanks for checking in.

Monty, thanks for taking the time to register. I learned everything I know about deadpan humor from your dad and I still have "Politics is a dirty business. This is a dirty record." on my "to buy list.
