It's more an annoyance than a big deal but this should've been rectified by now - just wondering if it's just me.

Don't know if it's just you, but I haven't noticed any problem like that.

Considering I practically live in my various email's inbox, I check Gmail around 5 times a day. I get that error at least 3 times a month.

It's not unusual or worrisome. It just means that the server that your particular Gmail account intertube flat and will be back shortly.

I also stuck my Gmail widget in my iGoogle page and leave that open most of the day. That way, I can check to see what emails I have without having to login.

I, and a lot of other users, noticed it after upgrading to the "Newer Version."

Here's an article about it:

ah-hah - I bet that's it thx. This just started happening a week or 2 ago and it happens EVERY time.

Apparently they have ex-MS developers/testers working there.

Edit: well wait a sec. Is the "upgrade" automatic? How can I use the old one (as I don't/didn't install any files either way)?

On the upper right corner of your screen in Gmail you will see "Settings" "Older Version" and "Help."

If you have the older version it will say "Newer Version" up there.

If you do have the Newer Version, you can click on "Older Version" and then save a link to it.

Ah, that explains it. I've been seeing this on my home pc, which I don't use very often, and not my laptop. Not sure why that would be, and hadn't got round to googling about it yet; now I know it's a gmail problem, not something at my end.

I get that message on occasion and attribute it to server maintenance or router maintenance or something. During these times I can get my Gmail on my iPhone.
