This is a serious question: I've seen so many woos spell atheism/atheist wrong that it find it hard to believe it's just a dumb typo. And it's always some theist spelling it this way (usually while spelling "theism" right, when they know what it means) and not just here so it doesn't seem to be a JREF joke I'm not getting.

Is it their way of mocking us? If it is, how is it supposed to be mocking?
Is there a definition I just don't know? Wikipedia just redirects it to "atheist" and there is no mention of it in dictionaries (see the one sarcastic exception from urban dictionary below)?
Is it a conspiracy? Are they told this is the way god wants those evil non-believers spelled at some secret training camps in apologetics?
Were they designed that way?
Are they just totally uninformed?
Is it really possible they all make the same honest mistake?!?

What?

From Urban dictionary:

"4. Athiest
A teenager that says he/she does not believe in God in order to rebel against parents or some other authority figure. An "athiest" usually becomes a Christian within a couple of years. Sometimes they eventually learn how to spell the word "atheist", and then go around proclaiming they were atheists until they "felt God's presence" or some other bulls*it.

My parent's made me go to church yesterday, and I wanted to play video games instead, so now I am an athiest."

PS: I know it's not all of them, DOC seems to be one exception from what I've read. Or is he just a shill?

I tend to spell athiest and thiest equally wrong and write. Depending on which letter comes first win I simultaneously hit the "e" and 'i' keys. Sometimes a "y' accidently gets in there, to.:boggled:

That's quite a long, somewhat ranting, OP about an innocent spelling mistake. There are better things to worry about, aren't there?

.....and there is also Sod's Law (Murphy's in Merkinland) whereby any post dealing with speeling will automatically contain an error. ;)

It's that whole "I" before "E" "rule" we all learned in school.....

Some people just can not shake it.....

"I before e... always."
"What are you, an idiot, Brian?"
"Apparently."
So she explains it.
"No, Brian. It's i before e except after c and when sounding like a as in neighbor and weigh, and on weekends and holidays and all throughout May, and you'll always be wrong no matter what you say!"
That's a hard rule. That's a- that's a rough rule.

Well... thing is I can't believe it's just a spelling mistake/typo (I don't remember ever reading "christain" for example), that's why I'm asking. At the very least it's a new meme waiting to happen.
And btw. I wrote this after reading "aethiest" on some other thread I didn't want to derail.

Aethiest is a favorite of mine. I can only imagine those people consider Einstein to be Satan.

I almost always type athiest first, before I backspace and correct it. Feels right typing it that way, but is an obvious misspell when I look at it. I can't explain why...

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

It's like the way "Limpballs" uses "Democrat" party, instead of "Democratic".

It pisses off a lot of democrats........but as far as the atheist deal?

I dunno.

I don't get my panties twisted over much........even when my dog calls me,
"His Kitty".

I think it's part of an organized plan aiming to slowly turn us into believers. Atheists -> Athiests -> Bathiests -> Bathiers -> Bethiers -> Belieres -> Believers

Doesn't that require them to believe in evolution?

Well, many of them do spell a lot of other words incorrectly, as well. Though if you can spell 'theist' correctly, it really boggles the mind that it should be so hard just to put an 'A' in front of that, and get 'atheist'.
