Matthew 26:39 (NIV)
39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
I've been wondering this weekend, what is the cup that Jesus spoke about before he went to the cross? Was it the pain he was about to go through?

I believe it to mean the burden he bears, ie the sin of mankind and his duty to die, however it has been a long time since I have read this and not having a bible handy can't look up the surrounding text.

I believe he was referring to his codpiece. Stretched out like he was, it was starting to give him a rash.

I don't know this exact quote, but I'm pretty sure that I understand the reference. The "CUP" refers to the physical body, in which the spirit is contained. This is the Esoteric understanding of the Holy Grail as I have come to know it. What Christ is doing is asking God to kill his body, releasing his soul. It's a bit of Gnosticism that the editors must have missed.
