Mothman lives
POINT PLEASANT -- It's the eyes of the Mothman that are causing a fright.
It's not the real Mothman perched on a downtown street corner, but the 10-foot-tall statue of the winged apparition that terrified locals in 1966 and 1967 looks real enough to give people a start.
...
There are some in West Virginia who do want the contribution made by Point Pleasant to cryptozoology and the paranormal to be forgotten. As if that Richard Gere movie was not enough, now there is an annual 'Mothman Festival'.
Ugh!

I hated that movie. Boring and stupid.

It's a brilliant book, though. The truth or falsity of it was entirely irrelevant to my unbridled enjoyment at the non-stop parade of unclassifiable creepy weirdness that leaps off ever page.

What were your thoughts on the movie?
I have not read the book.
I think one of my problems was that I just didn't find Richard Gere and the woman who played his wife to be even remotely believable.

I heard that the folks of Point Pleasant were really peeved that the movie was filmed in Kittanning, PA.

I'm afraid I've not seen it. It looked like they'd removed almost everything that wasn't UFO-related, and turned it into a long episode of the X-Files, which is really missing the point. By coincidence, yesterday my brother mentioned that he'd seen it and said that while it managed to create a reasonably spooky atmosphere early on, the nature of the denouement is such that it's an inevitable anti-climax. That's what you get for adapting a 'true' story, I suppose.
I have not read the book.
It's one of my favourite books ever, but I think the film tie-in is abridged, and the full length version is out of print, which is an utter crime. OK, it's not literally a crime, but I'm prepared to exaggerate and lie about the situation, such is my love of the book.
To be honest, though, I would hesitate to recommend the book to a Skeptic. I suspect many of the people here would find it really, really annoying and wonder why anyone would waste their time reading it.

That's hillarious. An entire town fooled by a fairy tale.

I'd say it's more along the lines of 'make a buck out of', rather than 'fooled by'.

Well I have to admit though it's a more credible tale than, ooo, say, Christianity.

But didn't you think that one scene where the phone voice was telling him what line he was reading in the book or that he was holding chapstick was enjoyably creepy? And I have this thing for Laura Linney - girl next door with just a hint of secret sluttyness?

After living in LA (lower Alabama) and discovering that Enterprise has a monument to the Boll Weevil.

I stopped begruding any political entity from trying to make a few tourist dollars off something that happened in it's past even if it's woowoo.
