I heard an analogy yesterday, that compared the "Religious Right" of the U.S. to the "Taliban" of Afghanistan. I hadn't really thought about it, but could this be a valid analogy, although maybe not quite as extreme?

The difference is Taliban did what religion right only talks about.

I have no doubt that our current AG and maybe even Bush would be glad to rule the country by the Bible. The religious right and the far left both scare the hell out of me in that they both think their cause is so right it does not matter what they do to get there.

I'd say it's certainly a valid analogy. Any analogy can be stretched to the breaking point, of course.

We could compare the inssitence that America has a Christian heritage and that the founding fathers were al Christian to the Taliban demolishing those giant Buddha statues which were a part of Afghanistan's heritage.

Taliban - kills people who object
Religious right - Kills abortion doctors.

Taliban - siezed control of a state (Afghanistan)
Religious right - trying to sieze control of a state.

Ok, so the answer is "not yet, at least".

Ok, you have a point there. US gov, however, does not endorse it and in addition tried to prosecute those who try to/do kill abortion doctors.

Some noted commentators, such as Bill Moyers, have compared the so-called "Religious Right" to the Taliban.

hmmm...

I've heard a few frothing-at-the-mouth-right-wing-radio-talk-show-hosts refer to the liberal left as actual members of the Taliban

Here's an example of How Christians Would Run America (http://www.enyart.com/features/writings/dayone.shtml).*

*Please keep in mind the author of this revenge fantasy is a Christian Reconstructionist a tiny minority who actually would run this country like the Taliban ran Afghanistan.

And the government of Afghanistan didn't endorse the Taliban movement until it actually seized the control and became the government.

(Of course, post-Soviet and pre-Taliban Afghanistan didn't really have a government at all.
