I'm willing to donate £10 to JREF in the name of whoever is the democratic winner. Or, they can just keep the money themselves.
I am still no closer to one of my ambitions, and that is to understand why Conspiracy theories fester in the minds of the young, and sometimes the old. Viewing posts here, it seems there are various theories. Some believe it to be a disproportion thing, some find it to be a rebellion against authority, some believe it to be kids wanting excitment in their lives, or a need for a secular God. However, I do believe it to be one source, one promoter.
So, if there are people willing to type up a good, comprehensive essay, no longer than 700 words or so, and then, in a seperate thread, are chosen to be the winner, the 10 pounds is theirs. With many posters American, I am sure at the current time in their economy they are desperate for a few British pounds.;)
This thread is only a 'Would you be willing to do this' thread. If I get more than, 3 posters who agree in 48 hours, I will start a thread for them to post their theory in.

Psychologies vary. As a rule it requires assuming that most sudden badthings are too complicated/unlikely for a small group or one person to do.

Can't the reason be a combination of the things you list, and more?

So you are saying you got Ten Pounds in your pocket, and you are indeed happy to see us?
Interesting. Flattered. Even a little curious.
But I am a one woman guy. Sorry.

I would be willing to do it, but I if I were wagering on a winner, I would bet my $10 on Dave Rogers before the first word is typed.

I’ve pondered this myself and posted comments on this subject here and elsewhere on the net, but it might take me some time to organize my thoughts. Is there a deadline on submissions?
(And how much is 10 pounds in American money?)

My first thought: "10 lbs of what?"
What makes the grass grow green?
What the truthers spew?
Korean Fertilizer?

What exactly is the challenge? Write an essay on why CTists are the way they are?

no, last week was a fantastic time to visit the US :D
Anyway, also to the op, I don't think you're going to get a definitive answer here, people believe CTs for a range of different reasons; because it fits with their political views, because it makes them feel special, because CTs generally provide a clear and strong narrative in a confusing and often ambiguous world- and for many many other reason. In fact there are as many (if not more) reasons to believe in CTs are there are conspiracy theorists.
The trouble is, those in the best position to give evidence on why people believe in CTs (the believers themselves) are by their very nature the least likely to provide that evidence.
