Okay, so I've heard of the Tor network and I know what proxies are, but I have only a theoretical knowledge of such things.
How does one surf anonymously on the internet? That's probably 100% impossible, but I'd like to get as close as I can to true anonymity as possible.

Any pointers? Where do I start?

You should know that merely using a proxy does not necessarily make you anonymous. If you have javascript enabled then many sites can use this to get your real IP.

A secure, anonymous VPN is pretty effective - like Relakks or VPNout etc - how anonymous, in the face of the law, will depend on their privacy policy. These systems will even hide your identity when using other services like bittorrrent etc.
