Edward Said has died of lukemia.
Tribute (http://books.guardian.co.uk/news/articles/0,6109,1050286,00.html).
According to today's Sydney Morning Herald, most of the Israeli newspapers have refused to report his death. It's a pity some people have to be so petty. Like him or hate him, you cannot deny he was an intellectual whose voice had a profound influence on the discourse of the Palestinian cause.
Well, who cares how others act. I'll miss him.

I knew he had been dying of lukemia for awhile, but I was still taken aback to see his obit in the paper. The _New York Times_ devoted quite a bit of space (2000 words at least I reckon), but it was still a terrible description of Said's personality and life's work.

Edward Said was a great man and deserves a better thread than that and I will start another one beyond this cheap criticism to Israel.

I was criticising the Israeli newspapers that didn't report his death. Quit being so goddam precious.

When it comes to Edward Said what the Israeli newpapers thought or did is quite irrelevant. The centre of Said's work and life was Palestine. His vison was a free democratic and independant Palestine that its creation wouldn't be just a reflex reaction to the existence of Israel.
This vision was quite different to the way the majority of the Arab world and Arafat himself was looking Palestine. That's why he was a persona non-grata to the Palestinian Authority.
Quit being so ignorant.

I am thinking of a word that begins with 'b' and ends with 'h'. (hint: it is not "bath")
P.S. How silly is it to reduce a thread to petty squabbling by charging petty squabbling? Argh.

"The Politics of Dispossession" is a must read.
It's inestimable just how much of a vital man he was, just how much his writings articulated the Palestinian cause, the absolute right to equality of rights and human compassion for the Palestinians and the hope that, in a unified Palestine, both communities could live together.
Was good to have a prominent voice that articulated the deceit of the Oslo negotiations too.

Edward Said's book were banned by the Palestinian Authority but your problem is how the Israeli newspapers dealed with his death. Right!

Okay, I'm thinking of another word. Well, it's a slightly modified version of the earlier word, but this time add 'y'.
Anyway, I'm going to contribute a useful link: Alexander Cockburn's thoughts: http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=22&ItemID=4251
