Castro steps down as leader of Cuba. I guess he may even be dead already.

Just speculation on radio.

Ahhhhh, speculation by unnamed sources. Gotcha.
The CNN article quoted certainly reads like his "obit" --- but if he was indeed dead, why the official silence? What is the logic in "keeping him on ice" secretly and not revealing the news?

They're just going to replace one dictator for another.

According to our local newspaper, he has retired and will continue to publish periodic essays on a variety of topics.
He's been at this Cuban nationalism via communism thing for half a century. Let's not begrudge him his retirement, shall we?

Probably to be ghost written. Put some sunglasses on him and prop his corpse up, keep the party going, ala Weekend at Bernie's.

American elder statemen, Kissinger, Clinton, Nixon, others, write and get paid handsomely to do so.
Why not Fidel?

I'm not sure how they do it in Cuba, but I would think getting paid handsomely to write speeches or go on speaking tours would smack of too much Capitalism.

If Nixon can still write he should claim the $1 million while it's still available...

Raul castro.
I doubt it, Fidel stayed in power for so many years because he was very charismatic, he had strong personality and well he was unique. Many Cubans liked him and supported him throughout the years. Raul is a different person, he was always a shadow, doing the dirty work. I don´t think he has many supporters inside the system. This is a great opportunity for a change (well until Fidel dies, as he still has strong influence on people´s mind).

"USA gives up on dream of assassinating Castro"
Castro might still invade the U.S., but only to retire in Florida.

Here's what many Americans - even some intelligent ones - don't seem to understand about Cuba and Castro.
Castro was a dictator who replaced another dictator. Under Batista, Cubans couldn't vote, couldn't speak freely, and most of them had little food and virtually no health care. Under Castro, Cubans couldn't vote, couldn't speak freely, but they had food and health care. Whether Castro was motivated by ideology or by the time-tested tactic of buying off the masses, most Cubans were better off under Castro than they had been under Batista. Since the US had supported Batista, they didn't trust the US.
Communist Cuba was a minor threat to US security while the USSR was around. After the USSR dissolved, it became just another Caribbean dictatorship and about as threatening to the US as a dust mite is to an elephant.

Actually, would he be subject to the same loophole that allows other Cubans to remain in the US if he makes it to here? Is there an "except Fidel Castro" clause in that rule?
