Edelmann proposed a theory of consciousness in which re-entrant loops in the hypothalmus produce the sensations of consciousness. I'm not exactly sure as to the exact wording, but the word "sampling" was used in his explanation.

Was this basically the same this? The re-entrant loop allowed the cells to receive a signal from within (from themselves to themselves) and from with-out (from the outside, the initial signal), and that's what produced the consciousness? Or is his theory different?
