Although the orginal crime occured in New Zealand, his three year old daughter was abandoned in Melbourne Australia. The thing that made this crime so personal to me - He told the girl to wait for him in the middle of a busy railway station
As he walked away - he didn't look back, not even once. I dont care about the other crimes he is going to be charged with, but to not look back once, even just to give a re-assuring smile, that just cuts me very deep.
It seems some pro-active citizens in Georgia saw his image on a local crime show, realised who he was and detained him till authorities arrived.

I am hearing you - Murder and such is reported daily. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances to the events that have to be learned. Often there are is not.
Murdering a friend, lover, stranger is bad enough - But to simple walk away from your own flesh and blood, really elevates it for me. Particuarly a child with virtually no English, and in a foreign country.
New Zealand justice will give him his day in court, and even if they have the wrong person, or his actions are justified, there is still the question of what happened in Melbourne

Fair enough. I am at least comforted by the belief that the child was so young that there will not be lasting effects.

I loved this part from the article:
"Xue was captured by six American-Chinese men in Chamblee on Friday morning.
They jumped on him, tied his hands behind his back with his belt and pulled his trousers down to his ankles and knotted them so he could not run off."

I am pleased to see that the citizens felt empowered enough to make a citizen's arrest.
So, when does some half wit enter this thread and begin the abhorrence of vigiilantism in Chamblee? :p

DRIf we had nationwide mandatory gun ownership we would not now be saddled with the cost of a plane ticket to Oz and the Ozzies would not be bothered with the expense of trial.
I'll leave it to the readers to determine if I am serious or not...

In China in the old days, trousers had very large waistbands, held closed with a belt. If you took away a man's belt, he was effectively crippled tyring to hold up his pants. Western pants, with their tighter waistband, require a little further attention.
Let's remember that trick with the knotted trousers. A damn good, quick hobble.

I liked it better that way.

Ah, I see your priorities now!
Your approach would certainly have saved the cost of a trial, I do concede. (Although we won't mention the clean-up and compensation bill.) And you are quite right to be concerned about the cost of his air travel to NZ. That must surely blow out some overly bloated government department's annual travel budget to all hell and back.
I'll let you wonder the same thing...

DRI abhor the vigiilantism in Chamblee. People would be much better off doing vigilantism instead. The other sounds just sick...

Quite right - except he's coming back here for the trial. He abandonded his kid in Oz, he killed his wife over here, so we'll have him.

Wow. I've never seen someone mistake NZ for Aus and be calmly corrected before. Usually it's an embarrasing trip to the emergency room to explain how they 'slipped' and fell on the point of the globe...

Actually, I once confused the Australian All Blacks for the New Zealand Springboks and everyone was really cool about it.

I blame Nelson Mandela.
If Apartheid hadn't ended, there could never have been any confusion because the Springboks were All White.

It's good that he was caught, and also good that he can be returned to NZ almost immediately because of immigration violations rather than going through a drawn-out and more expensive extradition process.
As to how he was caught: we have had brainless television reporters here telling us how his captors risked their lives to catch him because he is a martial arts expert.
These people stand up every day to tell us what is going on in the world!

Can't say I've heard that twist, although the martial arts expertise was mentioned. Still, seeing current pics of him, the only "fighting art" he looks like he'd be any good at is sumo.

I would be more than happy to see him fend off an All Black sidestep with his martial arts

You're obviously pretty ignern't on geography and reading as well. It's been covered in this thread that he's being deported to New Zealand, where he faces murder charges.
And no, we don't have the death penalty (nor does Australia). Like most enlightened countries, we did away with that kind of stupidity 40+ years ago.
