Forgive me if this has been answered over and over but I am really bad with the search stuff.

I have a HP PC running Widows XP. I recently switched from AOL to COMCAST (the local cable provider) and a cable modem. They did the install and everything works very well. Much quicker than the old dial-up. However, pop-ups everywhere! I've also noticed that my web browser settings (MS Internet Explorer) are being manipulated: links added, home page changed etc.

If this is being done couldn't something more sinister be occuring?

What is the best way to protect my PC.

Here are a couple of threads worth reading:

My browser has been hijacked (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27461)

Something f***ed up my homepage! (http://www.randi.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27456)

I also recommend Mosilla. It's a lot safer.

Using Microsoft Internet Explorer allows your computer to have unprotected sex with every web page you visit.

Using Microsoft Eudora allows your computer to have unprotected sex with every e-mail you open.
