Being French is a deadly sin

This is in the religion forum rather than politics or flame war, because the point isn't French-bashing, it's what exactly is the authority of the Pope?

A group of French chefs and
intellectuals have sent a
petition to the Pope, asking him
to reclassify the deadly sin of
gluttony.

They argue that the French word
for the sin - gourmandise - has
changed its meaning over the
years and is now used to denote
a gourmet, someone who truly
appreciates good food and wine,
rather than a glutton.

French are well known for their atheism....

I thought that the term that describes a foodie in Frence is gourmant and not gourmandise...

It seems that whoever attempts to correspond with the Pope gets some sort of publicity and French Chefs are dying for publicity.

There are at least three forms of Gluttony:
1) Wanting more pleasure from something than it was made for.
2) Wanting it exactly our way (delicacy).
3) Demanding too much from people (excessive desire for other people's time or presence).

I'm guessing the French chefs (and intellectuals :p ) are worried about #2.

I don't think anybody has accused the French of pigging out on burgers and milkshakes.

"Put a knife to your throat..." catches the spirit of religion perfectly. :)
