View Full Version : Spiderman Watch: "I won't take the lift down"

"I won't take the lift down" was the phrase that Alfred Mansbridge heard before he finally figured out that it was a Spiderman watch alarm spouting a catchphrase from the movie.
my question is, What was the catch phrase?
I know it wasn't "I won't take the lift down" because I don't remember that from the movie, and even if it were a line in there some where, why choose it for a catch phrase? I imagine that it was probably more along the lines of "I won't let you down", but I don't remembe that either.
Anyone know what the actual phrase might have been?

Wait a minute... Amazing Spiderman... Amazing Randi... gasp! His secret identity is out!
EDIT: Spiderman is quite well known for having tons of snappy one-liners and clever comebacks... and seeing as how he can climb buildings and swing through the city, it might be considered a generic lighthearted comment in the face of imminent catastrophe.

Yeah, maybe. I'm quite familiar with Spidey comics. One, he's distinctly American, living in New York City and would use the word "elevator" rather than "lift". Two, the watch is a movie promotion so the spoken line most likely came from the movie and nobody there, to the best of my memory had an English accent or spoke of a "lift".
No, I'm sure the guy heard what was said wrong, I'm just trying to figure out what the quote actually was...
(This kind of feels like a Sprint commercial, doesn't it? "I asked 'How're the children?" and when I got home she had floured the children.")
(or my favorite by far, "I ordered 200 oxen. But when they came, they sent 200 dachshunds." "Look out! Stampeed!")

The closest line in the movie is, "Don't mind us; she just needs to use the elevator." He says it after he lands on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (? I think so, some roof with a garden) with MJ and he says it to a bystanding couple.

Does he say "I won't take the elevator" at any place in the movie? I'll have to go rent it and watch it again.
I don't think it's a catch phrase from the movie. I think the Guardian got it wrong. It's just a Spiderman joke--"I don't need to take the elevator, I'll just spin some web and get down to ground level that way."
Here's the original Guardian article, if anybody's interested. Same as in Randi's commentary.

He is?
Is he any relation to the Marvel comics character (who recently even had a big-budget movie): Spider-Man?

I'm sure that the watch didn't say "I won't take the lift down." Who would make a watch say that? That's a stupid catch-phrase. Can you imagine little Timmy showing off his watch to all his friends, "look at my new watch guys! It says "I won't take the lift down." Isn't cool?"

Just that it's a fairly common error, and many people aren't even aware they are misspelling the name, so I thought it worth pointing out.

Actually, in a package the size of a watch, space for ROM is at a premium. Somebody may have recorded it with "lift" just because "lift" can be said clearly in less than half the time it takes to clearly say "elevator". Anybody know who makes these things? There's too many product hits on "spider-man watch" for me to find it... I found an identical-looking product at bobswebstore.com but it didn't say anything about an alarm...

So it probably says something else.

Hm, a friend of mine has a Homer Simpson watch that says "mmmmmmm, hamburger."
About the only non-boring thing I can think of for a watch to do if it has a sound chip is to function as a telephone.
Talking watches--which announce the time every five minutes in a telephone-company voice--annoy me, though I know that some blind people swear by them. I just wish that instead, they had something that used a pattern of on-off vibrations to convey the time, so they could wear the things at concerts without drasticly changing the experience for everyone around them...
