After attemping to plug in a video camera into my firewire port, I discovered that it wouldn't read the camera. Subsequent connections with two other cameras and my iPod (that has been connected to this computer before) showed that none of them could receive a connection. However the FireWire port did, in fact, charge the iPod, so it is still connected to the rest of the computer.
I then went into the device manager and uninstalled the FireWire device with no problems. After restarting my computer, the port was detected as New Hardware, however I never received a "Ready to use" message, which led me to believe (correctly) that drivers were not installed for it.
I haven't used any device that uses the FireWire port for some time now (including the iPod) so I have no time frame on when it stopped working. It may just be the FireWire port that has stopped working as I have recently installed a USB external hard drive with no problems, though I haven't uninstalled the drivers for this to test this theory as of yet (for obvious reasons).
Unless neglecting to use the port can cause this problem, I can think of no reason that the FireWire port would stop reading devices, yet still be detected and clearly be connected. Can anybody?
