I was just reading Rasputin's biography (check the facts on the net) and realized how much his life closely and eerily mirror's Obama's so I made an accidentally long post listing them, since I only started with a few.

1. Both went from obscurity and inexperience politically to extremely influential unprecedentedly quickly.

2. Rasputin was a deeply religious, mystic, unconventional Christian monk who put emphasis on finding the God within, the most religious person to gain so much political influence in Russia and Obama's the most politically-usefully religious candidate in recent US history.

3. Obama only became religious at age 25 and did so despite having "some doubts," and because of a certain church and church community that had a strong affect on him.

Rasputin only became religious at age 18 after being sent to a monastarey, where he became strongly religous for the first time under the influence of mentor-like elders there, and became very unconventionally Christian.

4. Obama has used hard drugs repeatedly much more than any candidate in US history has ever publically acknowledged.

Rasputin was at least rumored to be a heavy substance abuser, more so than most or all other Russian politicians.

5. Rasputin's two siblings died when he was a child and Obama's father abandoned the family when he was a child.

6. Both use personal charisma to great effect and contributes a lot to their popularity and influence.

7. Obama plans to use his influence to pull out troops from the Iraq War, Rasputin used his influence to try to pull Russian troops from WW1.

8. Like Rasputin, Obama is physically awkward and ugly or different looking (ie, the ears, lanky, gangly) but has the greatest amount of sex appeal attributed to him of any candidate other than Kennedy.

9. Haunting Obama's political career are rumors he belongs to or is associated with a contraversial religious group that he denies belonging to, which would make him politically unviable if true - Islam and also now Pastor Wright's idealogy.

Rasputin had similar potentially politically ruinous rumors, that he had to deny, that he was a member of a banned Christian sect called Khlysty, which was rumored to combine sexual and religious ecstasy in their rituals.

10. Followers often compare Obama to the greatest historical figures in US history, the allegation is often brought up that his followers creepily view him in a way comparable to a messiah or healer, and he generates intense emotion and adulation despite never having done anything but use charisma and his religious and philosophical exhortations. He's said he entered politics to "do the Lord's work," has said he hopes to be like "God's instrument" as president, and equated his policies to helping to create "God's kingdom on earth."

Rasputin used his religiousness to gain trust and influence. Followers believed him to be a prophet and Rasputin played up this notion often claiming to know what God wants.

11. Both rose to power in large part due to giving hope and promises of healing to desperate people who felt that they tried everything else to no avail.

12. Rasputin is sometimes described as the first rock star, Obama is often called a political rock star.

13. Rasputin's influence and change to the status quo was controversial and strongly hated by some, there were threats to his life, and eventual assasination. Many people worry Obama will be assasinated, much more so than past candidates.

And is there a conclusion to be reached from this?

Yikes, the woo quotient in the OP is roughly on par with formulating sentences from every nth character in the bible. Being generous that is. (Or has a joke swooshed right by me?)

Rasputin = 3 syllables
Obama = 3 syllables

Plus you can rearrange the letters of "Barack Hussein Obama" to spell, "Him a bare ass on a buck."

Wake up, America!

Next, the eerie similarities between Hillary Clinton and Saint Hillary of Arles...
Hilary was born to an affluent family. Hillary was born to an upper middle class family

Hilary reached success at a young age, thanks to his connected relatives. Hillary reached success at a young age thanks to her connected husband.

Hilary had difficulties with other bishops in his jurisdiction. Hillary had difficulties in her relationship with her husband.

When Hilary overstepped his bounds (in deposing bishops), the Pope stripped him of his powers. When Hillary overstepped her bounds (in proposing universal health care), the President removed her from her committee.

Hilary died at the age of 46. Hillary became first Lady at the age of 46.

Hilary wrote two works: "Vita S. Honorati Arelatensis episcopi" and "Metrum in Genesin", for which he received great acclaim. Hillary wrote "It Takes a Village" and "Dear Socks, Dear Buddy: Kids' Letters to the First Pets", the former of which earned her a Grammy.

It's spoooooky!

Next week: The eerie similarities between John McCain and Die Hard's Officer John McClane!

Wow, these coincidences are eerie! Here's a few more:

1) Rasputin was from Russia, Obama can identify Russia on a map.

2) Obama was a state senator from Illinois, the Land of Lincoln. Rasputin was born in 1869, only 4 years after Lincoln was shot.

3) Rasputin spent his early life in Asia (Siberia), Obama spent a few years in his youth in Asia.

I'm sure if we look hard enough we can find even more similarities.

So if the Russian Imperial family is looking for an advisor I'm pretty sure Obama will take the job.

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin is a strange, un-American sounding name.
Barack Hussein Obama is a strange, un-American sounding name.

No one named Rasputin has ever been elected President of the United States.
No one named Obama has ever been elected President of the United States.

This is fun!

1) Both Obama and Rasputin were men.
2) Both have at least one "r" somewhere in their names.
3) Both breathed air.
4) Both were carbon based life forms.
5) Both were mammals.

IT'S UNCANNY!

Will someone move the 2008 Presidential Elections sub forum to the humor section please? I've lost all respect for it as you can see but I still like posting in it.

Obama turned Chris Matthews into a quivering mound of love jelly.

COINDICENCE?!??! I TNIHK NAWT!

Just because your thread turned into a joke, doesn't mean you should drag the whole subforum down.

Oh, forgot to add....

Like Rasputin, Obama is likely to be brought down by a mob of angry white men trying to defend the status quo from radical thought.

@ marksman

Seems an angry black man (Wright) is doing that without even trying. Why should those angry white men get off the couch and do that?

It's almost The Final Four! :p

Note to self: do not compare Obama's life to Rasputin's instead of other great historical figures at a dinner party for a laugh - misunderstanding will ensue.

But when such meaningless and/or cherry picked details of Lincoln's life for example and Obama's are compared in actual seriousness by Obama himself, it's not only unfunny to you but not woo either as another poster said my OP's reasoning was?

Checkmate, out of control jocular thread.

By ourselves, this change will not happen. Divided, we are bound to fail.

But the life of a tall, gangly, self-made Springfield lawyer tells us that a different future is possible.

He tells us that there is power in words.

He tells us that there is power in conviction.

... let us finish the work that needs to be done, and usher in a new birth of freedom on this Earth. (Obama using a full Lincoln speech quote about the Civil War, uncredited)

I haven't come to terms with Bush so I disagree and politics isn't worth caring about anymore strongly on the level of individual politicians. I now recognize that the US is capable of anything after the Bush years so best to make fun of it instead and it's participants, of whom democrats are the most funny and feckless so far and republicans the most dangerous.

Wrong note.

Note to latent aaaack: When making a joke thread be sure to niclude a smiling emoticon; otherwise people will rightly assume that, when you later claim the thread was intended to be humorous form the start, you are trying to rewrite history to save face.

If you want to make fun of Obama comparing himself to Lincoln (and I was unaware of that), do so openly, and not in such a clumsy manner. (Though I don't think you were doing that -- I think this is yet another futile attempt to save face.)

The only part of the OP that should be obviously factual and serious are the descriptions of Obama, which are true and relevant independently of anything about Rasputin and which I've already discussed to death. Their similarity to factoids about Rasputin, that I was reading, rather than say Kennedy is what's entertaining. The Obama to Lincoln, MLK, Kennedy or whoever meme is common knowledge. But, yes posting a long comparison list and Obama ridicule on this skeptic board is asking for it.
