Researchers at German and Austrian universities found only one juvenile leech in birch forests near Graz, Austria, in searches from 2001-2005.

Scientists had found 20 specimens, up to four centimetres long in the same forests in the 1960s.

The researchers in the article were blaming global warming, but now I guess we know what really happened to the poor little suckers.

How much blood can a leech suck?
If a human has about 5 litres of the stuff, and a leech processes (let's say) 100cc, that means 50 leeches. How often does one require purification?
Can you use them for bait afterwards?
Specifically, what do leeches remove from blood? What, if anything, do they put in?
