I love it! Unless you're under 18 and you're reading this, in which case - it's awful and drugs are bad and I hate it so much.
But seriously, it's super great. A cheap, legal hallucinogen that doesn't take up your entire day. How can you not love that? I just spent the last half hour pulling myself out of the MGM logo and pushing over street-sign men given life. Now I'm off to a party, but I just wanted to let you all know that salvia rules.
Anyone else here big in to hallucinating?

I smoked this once, got a potent extract and used a butane lighter as was suggested.
It was not like anything else... That being said, I couldn't appreciate anything that was going on because I was COMPLETELY disconnected from reality. Like 100% not there. The hallucinations were not just manipulations of objects and sounds that were present, it was like I was completely torn out of the universe and put somewhere else...
After putting down the bong I instantly teleported to a different chair. After that it was all pure madness.
The drug seems dangerous to me because of the complete disconnect. Never ever do this without a sitter IMO.
It is totally legal too for some reason... At least in Ohio it is.

Yeah, it can be pretty intense if you smoke it and it's a heavy extract (like a 20x). It ain't a party drug, that's for sure. You just smoke it and hang out. And yeah, it's really rough for the first few minutes, you practically black out within seconds after you take the hit, then you just spend the next 5-10-20 min (depending on how hard it hits you) slowly working your way back in to reality. My friend tried it for the first time and he ended up sort of straddling my vacuum and hiding in the closet for a couple minutes before he calmed down (watching people smoke salvia is insanely entertaining). It's only dangerous if you're alone, and even then only if you smoke too much (or, like with any hallucinogen, you're just good with tripping to begin with).
I'm no stranger to tripping, but Salvia is definitely somethin' else.
Oh yeah, it's completely legal in the US. You can buy it at any headshop, online, etc. I think a few states are trying to pass some legislation regarding it, but nothing's gotten off the ground yet.

So...How does this stuff work? What is going on inside your body/brain to give these effects?
I'll probably dig around and look for info tomorrow if no one comes up with anything good on it.
Sterno is legal also, but I don't recommend drinking it ;)

I tried salvia divinorum once... for about 3 minutes I had intense tunnel vision, focused on my knees. I was swaying my knees back and forth. I had an an extremely ominous feeling that if I stopped moving my knees, something incredibly bad would happen. I felt like the universe would end if I didn't continue the motion. I didn't really hallucinate, and I still felt somewhat connected with reality, but it put me in a very strange mindset that I don't really want to go back to. I don't think I'll ever try it again.

It's not a drug that enhances sensory information--stuff from "outside"--it's more like a waking dream/nightmare.
Second that it can be a jarring experience and you need a sitter.
And, it comes on without warning. Quite unlike weed or the usual hallucinogens.
Not a fun drug, unless you think sky-diving is fun.
Probably not good for your noggin.

Yes, I was thinking of trying it... and started a post on the subject... but after reading of other's reactions, I decided not to.
I'd prefer not to know what is going on in the dark recesses of my mind.

its a divining herb.
best to have a serious question in your mind before taking it.
going there with no purpose at all could be dangerous.
I think it is good for finding an answer to a question, if only because the drug gives your mind a chance to let go of normal concerns for a moment.
(sure, this sounds wooish)
anyway, its about to become schedule 1, like most interesting halucinogens.

What would produce the sensation of a complete disconnect from reality or the feeling of being zapped into another chair.

I read on MAPS.org a few years back that crushing it and placing it under the tongue is the ost effective way to use SD. They also claim it is a great meditation aid.

I tried it once but hesitant to do it again(yet). Definitely the most potent drug I've taken, I think I made a mistake in underestimating it and getting the strongest they had, which was pretty overwhelming. I may try it again in the summertime and go for a weaker potency though.

I have no idea how it is possible to have such insane full on hallucinations, but I am not making it up, I actually experienced the teleportation thing again in travelling to my bathroom. When I was in the bathroom I was looking in the mirror and *fell* into it. After that I wandered around my apartment, not knowing who I was or where I was, I kept latching on to the numbers on my digital clock because I felt that they had something to do with who or what I was. It felt like this went on for 30 minutes or so... I eventually went and sat back down with my 2 friends that were there and began to come out of it. Then they told me...
4 or 5 minutes had elapsed since I smoked the Salvia, and I had not gotten out of my chair the entire time, they said I scared the crap out of them and just sat there mumbling about ducks. I don't even like ducks...

maybe it's a good meditation aid with the sub-lingual, sub-aythya dosage.

Yeah, I used the 20x extract, and I think that I used a large amount of it. I can imagine how a small dose that does not drag you into a false reality would work well as a meditation aid.

I've had several experiences with salvia. My first wasn't very pleasant, the more you do it the better it becomes. The last time I did it I took the hit and laid down on a picnic table, with a full moon out. All of a sudden the moon shot a ray of light down to me, and in a loud deep commanding voice asked me "what are you doing?" In my mind I weakly answered "salvia", and then the moon in a nicer less commanding voice said "me too" and proceeded to sing a salvia song to me, I cannot remember what was sung during the song, but that was the last time I tried salvia, after having the moon talk to me I thought you couldn't get any better than that, and have never done it since.

Yeah... that's what scares me... the idea of a complete psychosis and no way to escape... you just have to "wait"-- and time isn't passing in the usual manner.
Are you glad you tried it, Gate? Would you ever do it again?

I am glad that I at least tried it, just to have the memory of the experience. I really had no idea that the mind was capable of hallucinations that fully deposited you in an alternate reality. If I had not tried salvia I would still think that people were just making the stories up or exaggerating them.
I actually tried it again, and used an extract made by a few friends that got a LOT of leaves. I think it was too powerful because it just sent me into a catatonic stupor from which I remember nothing. After this one I was done.
The drug is somewhat scary as it showcases how the mind is a physical construct that can be completely annihilated by interacting with this substance. It is somewhat like a "mini-death" as far as your "self" is concerned. At least it was for me.
In terms of it being a frightening experience, I have OCD (I really do, I am not just one of those people that says they have it because the like their shoes in order, I am actually on SSI due to the severity.) and even with my hyper-aware mind, I had no concept of fear or being afraid until I was coming out of it and the hallucinations had stopped. I have heard that some people, including a few of my friends, sensed some sort of "void" that scared them however. I would say that it is a roll of the dice, but you won't get scared like "OMG WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME" because you simply can't have those sorts of thoughts during the trip.

If you are smoking it, make sure that you use a butane lighter. It needs to get very hot to work.
Have a nice sitter.

Yeah, get someone who you're fairly sure isn't going to **** with you while you're tripping, and get a little torch lighter (a regular lighter will work, but not well, it'd be a waste of salvia) for a couple bucks at that head shop. Plus, be sure to use a bong or a bubbler.
And don't listen to these 'it's like sky-diving in your brain AAAAH!' folk (even though that's not a bad description for your first time), or the 'only use for spiritual, mystic journeys in to vision land of shangrila!' special ed crowd. If you're stoked to try it out, you're gonna have a good time. Just enjoy the ride, and I hope you see some sweet stuff!
edit - did you buy the 10x, 21x, or 31x?

...
I agree with the part I bolded. The experience was absolutely vivid and real-seeming. Perhaps it could help in understanding how other people can believe their delusions. The brain can create these astonishing hallucinations. Mine reflected my extensive study of Stephen King.
Otherwise, I don't believe it has much value. I dream enough as it is. I get to fly, steal musical instruments from dark basements, score weed from strangers, and--best of all on rare good nights--see the Girl with the Halo. I don't have to do these things in reality or believe that they are real. They're just compelling fantasies.

I've had lots of experience with Salvia. The trip generally lasts 5 minutes. After 5 minutes you're back to reality and by the 10th minute everything is fine. You feel completely normal, you're mind doesn't feel tired at all after the trip. And it really IS a trip.
OK so the intriguing thing about this drug is that... if you try it a few times to get a good handle on what it is you're experiencing, you will realize very quickly that you are experiencing the same trip everytime that is completely unique to you and only you.
For me, the concept of "space" gets destroyed every time and different dimensions/worlds/potential-future-scenarios start overlapping all together. It's almost impossible to describe what it feels like for space to not exist but the experiencing it feels totally incredible. :p
For my other friend, what happens every time is everything becomes living and animated and alive. Everything from the cells on his body, to the material his shoes are made out of, to the rock he's standing on is experienced and seen as if they are made up of thousands of tiny-living-things.
And my other friend will always have a circus appear over the reality. Trees, cars and whatever else in front of her will turn into an amusement park and she'll be viewing rollercoasters, ferris wheels, etc.
So it's strange but I find it really interesting that everybody I've tried this with experiences the same thematic-trip that is completely unique to them every time. I always wondered what that means, but I doubt anybody knows, and those who know the least will just think I'm an idiot for even experimenting at all. Oh well. :)

Thank you for the encouraging words and all the advice for my first time. I have purchased 1 gram of 10x extract, and was wondering what proportion of this you would recommend for my my first time. In case body size matters, I am a 1.82m tall male, weighing 63 kilograms.

Just pack a small bowl and try it out. Try to inhale it all in 1 or 2 hits. If you feel nothing, pack more and try again. Oh and do it while sitting and have your sitter grab the pipe/lighter from you after you're done so you don't drop it, you clumsy stoner. :flamed:

Yeah, if you want to be turned off the idea of ever using anything, by seeing just how stupid, paranoid, and completely outside-of-reality drug people can get.
So yeah, I guess you're right.
More seriously, Erowid is not a reliable source. There's some good, accurate info, and some really really wrong info. It's pretty much a microcosm of the Internet. Take everything with a big pinch of salt until it's independently verified by a reliable source, preferably several.

I've been interested in this one for a bit. I'll be sure to have my most trusted friend babysit me if I do. I'm a lightweight with substance; drugs are, on the whole, very unappealing to me. But it seems interesting that it's such a trip with (allegedly) few side effects and a very short term. I don't like weed or alcohol whose effects linger and usually require sleep to wear off. I've got too much crap to do to be spending my time slowly coming back from a good time. My breaks at work are only 15 minutes!!!! j/k
