It's April 23rd tomorrow, and while that's not officially Shakespeare's birthday (his actual day of birth being unknown), it's the date most commonly associated with his birth. Either way, it's as good an excuse as any to celebrate him.
Being taught about him in school, I quite naturally developed a dislike for him, the teaching of Shakespeare never quite being interesting, something I blame mainly on his works being taught as a text rather then a play. And English teachers never quite being able capture the greatness of his plays. But in later years, with a bit of maturity, I've come to love the Bard. Actually seeing some of his plays, some of his works being done in films really made it come alive for me. I've been thinking of picking up the RSC's version of Shakespeares Complete Plays, mainly because it comes with lots of actors and directors notes, which will likely make it much better to read.
Anyway, will you be raising a glass to the Bard tomorrow?
