So Im trying to clean up this fecking PC which is a shared workstation. This means there are literally 100,000s of temporary internet files slowing the thing down.
I have tried using the option in the Tools menu (IE5 of course) but there is so much crap the computer has an apoplectic fit and crashes. So try and do it manually from windoze explorer but this will take far too long- if I try and delete more than 100 at a time, it crashes the PC.
So can I just delete entire temp' internet files sub-folders (there are about 50 of these) or will this cause my PC to crash permanently?

Have you tried doing it from a dos command prompt? Along the lines of:
Start...run... cmd
c:
cd wherever_temp_files_are
del /S *.*
I haven't tried the above, but it may work for you.

In fact, you can just delete the Content.IE5 directory from Windows Explorer.

I think he said he has already tried that. I would go for DOS mode.

I would go for a Linux boot. Knoppix is your friend.

If you go to Start Menu > Run and type "cleanmgr.exe" it should bring up a prompt that will ask you if you'd like to empty your Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, and Recycle Bin. Its a nice built-in Windows feature that actually works the way it is supposed to work.
If the temporary internet files are slowing down your computer, I suggest you open IE and go to Tools > Internet Options, then under the "Temporary Internet Files" frame you click "Settings" and set your disk cache to around 62 MB or so (I'm willing to bet its set at some absurdly astronomical number like 1024 MB).

Yes. All your cookies are stored in the "Cookies" folder (or at least most of them). I've done it many times, just make sure you highlight all the cookies (if everything is at default settings, cookies will look like text files). There will be a file called 'index.dat,' I would leave that file alone.
Oh yeah, this is under the WinXP OS. The temporary Internet folder should be under
x:\documents and settings\y user\cookies
[FOR IE]
If you want to delete the objects that are used to display or run certain things off remote sites, assuming you're using Internet Explorer, you can go to Internet Options > Settings > View Objects.
You can also view files and delete those cookies as well.
