Amid ethanol mandates and other such nonsense, somehow they managed to do something right!
Congress passes anti-genetic discrimination bill (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5g9PKo1Dr67gVSZWb-B4tOfMvmgDwD90D626G0):
Congress sent President Bush a bill Thursday forbidding employers and insurance companies from using genetic tests showing people are at risk of developing cancer, heart disease or other ailments to reject their job applications, promotions or health care coverage, or in setting premiums.
Bush was expected soon to sign the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which lawmakers and advocates called "the first major civil rights act of the 21st century." Federal law already bans discrimination by race and gender.
"Your skin color, your gender, all of those are part of your DNA," said Francis Collins, head of the National Human Genome Research Institute. "Shouldn't the rest of your DNA also fall under that protective umbrella?"
I'm stunned! But this is great news, and long overdue.

Did you see the vote totals for this? There was only one NO vote from the House, Senate was 100% YES. The one No vote came from that champion of liberty and individual rights Ron Paul.

What would a doctor know about such things? He had to deal with insurance companies up close and personal.
Still, given that he's a politician now, it's sorta funny. He's on the side of actuarials who want to deny coverage/treatment, which means a doctor loses income from either no case, or a case that can't pay for the treatment, or won't.
Ron Paul: shoots self in foot, if one stll considers him a doctor.

If it turns out that I have poor genetics, then I fully support this. If it turns out that I have great genetics, then I fully oppose it.

This congress is so brave voting unanimously on a bill that has no real effect currently since its really not problem yet.

Take that, plot of Gattaca, even though the part of the plot involves companies working around such laws...

Yeah, God forbid any elected body of representatives DARE to think more than two weeks in advance.
Seriously, your 'beam me up' comments suggests a time-frame of a couple of hundred years before this legislation becomes important. I suggest instead, a time-frame of about a decade. I hope you don't feel that's STILL too long to matter. We are humans, not mayflies, and it's nice when the political process actually understands this.

So Ron Paul, MD, who knows what it's like to be wrongly forced to provide treatment for those who can't pay, should give up that principle just because it spreads the misery by forcing it onto insurance companies?
How very modern and pragmatic of you, Darth.
I don't agree with Ron Paul on some things, but at least he stands by his principles rather than pandering.

Genetic discrimination already takes place every day. If you aren't taller than 5'7", you can't be a Rockette. If you can't lift more than 40 pounds, you can't handle packages.
Could someone tell me why an employer not hiring you because you are prone for bad health is wrong?
