Man Arrested In Texas For Trying To Cash $360 Billion Check (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/01/ap/strange/main4063895.shtml)

Gee, he almost got away with it... NOT!

(AP) Charles Ray Fuller must have been planning one big record company. The 21-year-old North Texas man was arrested last week for trying to cash a $360 billion check, saying he wanted to start a record business. Tellers at the Fort Worth bank were immediately suspicious _ perhaps the 10 zeros on a personal check tipped them off.

Fuller, of suburban Crowley, was arrested on a forgery charge. He was released after posting $3,750 bail.

Hmmm, I wonder where he got the idea?

Officers reported finding less than two ounces of marijuana and a .25-caliber handgun and magazine in his pockets.

Maybe he over-interpreted the news regarding the falling dollar and wanted to make sure his check would pay for more than a warm meal.

Yes, handguns often lend a false sense of superiority.

Lucky the police did not do a stop and search a few hours earlier or they might have found a larger quantity of drugs on him.

Or maybe he is a bit mentally sick?

I believe Gates is #3 these days, behind Buffet and the Mexican telecom guy. Still, no fair cutting in the line.

Well, he would have leapfrogged them too and been #1. That is, if the bank had cashed his check. Not many banks have $360 billion on hand.

Carlos Slim is the Mexican guy.

I don't what the current state of banks happens to be, but I'd be surprised if they keep much cash on hand. Don't most of the transactions take place electronically? I wonder how much physical money most bank branches have on their premises. If Willie Sutton were looking for a target, I'd think that cracking bank security systems would be the place to attack. Any security experts care to illuminate us?

I also suspect that the cheque might just bounce.

What has been the most valuable valid cheque?

I don't know about checks, but I did see a bill posted to the Internet some years ago for almost $2 billion. It was a data transfer charge between two giant Internet backbone providers.

Beerina, that would be more like the sort of method I'd expect for those sums.
