What's the deal with:
http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-12814826,00.html

I saw the report on Sky News and was more than a little sceptical - this could be the best news in the world for paralysed people, or it could be the cruelest hoax ever.

What say you all?

I'd have to see more info.

Like Denise, I would like to know the specifics of the spinal cord injury suffered, the details of ALL physical therapy received since the accident, and in particular the results of any neurological testing which has been periodically carried out during a period in which our understanding of how to assess and treat CNS injury has radically changed.

I am pretty familiar with the specific nature of Christopher Reeve's injury and how much re-myelinisation it would take to restore full CNS function or at least ambulatory functions. There is not enough detail given in the OP to know whether or not the medical situations are comparable.

I agree with reprise - and I would also ask: Just how badly was her spinal chord injured in the first place?

Yeah, thought as much. The news snippet was pretty thin on info and it had a lot of this smiling "Mind power" guy (Looked like an Austrian - with a huge moustache - just a guess). Interestingly, even though the girl professed to having taken two steps and moving her fingers, there was no movement other than her talking on the news. You would think that there would have been some attempt; even a thumbs-up!
Still, it's wierd that this should hit satellite news and be beamed worldwide as gospel - without so much as a doctor or any rational opinion in sight. There was just the implication left in the air that normal medical channels had failed her and that doctors are a bunch of bungling, heartless fools who cannot do anything to help. Anyway, I hope some more info can be gleaned about this mystery man - some digging seems warranted...

This was printed in 2002. No news on how effective any of it was.

On 1st February, I was feeling a bit down and I found the letter. I thought I may as well speak to the guy and find out what he does, so I called “The Mind Instructor” A.K.A Hratch Ogali** and he came to see me that afternoon. I immediately felt at ease with what he told me. To put it simply, he believes I have literally paralysed myself with my emotions and if I learn to deal with emotional stress in a different way and I no longer internalise negative, destructive feelings, I will start to get my movement back and ultimately, I’ll be able to walk.

This will sound totally weird to many of you but it makes perfect sense to me. I have been brought up homoeopathically and with the belief that you have to look at the whole make-up of a person and their environment in order to treat physical problems effectively; this is the basis of all “holistic” and “alternative” medicine.

Well, if this article is actually recent,

this chick dealing with the woo woo doc last year, before gemma, is STILL in a wheelchair.

Last article on page

“I use a power-wheelchair, which is very bulky and won’t get into a normal car boot, but it does fit easily into the back of my Galaxy and this has transformed my life. Before, I had to take my manual chair, meaning being pushed everywhere, something I find teeth-

AHA!!!

Disabled MAGIC ambassador and TV presenter Lara Masters, says she’s regretfully had to give up a new technique called 'Mind Instruction', which she’d been trying out in an effort to improve her mobility...
“I have to say I gave it my best shot, but I found out I wasn’t able to sustain the progress I’d made and that really frustrated me. Even so, I’m really glad I gave it a go because for 8 months my mobility was better than it had ever been.”

Read all about it

Does BBC splash THAT all over the news? no. They just move onto the next idiot moving onto the woo woo doctor.

Heh. I found that article too and had a grin. Well I guess the info about this Ogali character is pretty thin as I could find nothing else; so end of case? I will keep an ear open though.
