Bible-believers' morals are just as arbitrary and society-defined as those of atheists. It's naive of them to to think otherwise.

The day you can show me a Bible-believer who follows the Bible to the letter and doesn't arbitrarily pick and choose and subjectively interpret... you'll have a point. Otherwise, most of them are just as prone to free-thinking and change as the rest of us.

slingblade

No. The point is that evolution has nothing to do with morals, and you're stupid if you think the only reason you don't kick cats or rape babies is because InvisiSkyDaddy gave you a moral compass.

If only he'd included the Secret Decoder Ring....

I like the last panel, where Chick at least admits the god he worships is going to throw billions into the lake of fire, if for no other reason than they believe we evolved.

Yet he still thinks we should worship this thug.

Silentknight

Okay. So Jack Chick believes that the creator of the universe loves him, pays attention to every detail of how he thinks or lives his life, answers his prayers, will eternally reward him in paradise, will eternally punish everyone who isn't like him in hell, and that his beliefs derived from ancient scripture will remain the most concrete verdict on reality until the end of time... And he calls atheists arrogant.

Yeah.

That's hilarious - morals are rooted in our evolutionary heritage. And people wonder why atheists are "arrogant". How could you not be, when this is the competing worldview?

Try this take on your scenario.

God loves unconditionally. He loves Satan, who is stuck in Hell. (They have this falling out thing, and love can't be forced. ) He loves Satan so much he doesn't want him to be lonely. So, he provides for Satan to have company with like minded people who can't stand God.

Maybe God's not such a sonofabiscuit afterall, Beerina.

It is a spectacularly bad tract - but hardly very challenging. These things always put the words he would like non-believers to say into their mouths. In real life of course the conversations never work out that way.

I thought many churches had stopped using this chap's stuff because of the crude intellectual approach.

Tricky, I have faith in skeptics of a scientific bent being able to use science to figure out how to solve that challenge, even in non corporeal forms. Their problem is all the lawyers in Hell who'll sue them as soon as something breaks. ;)

All of these Chick characters who are supposed to be really really eeeeevil because they don't believe in Jesus just seem to hang around not doing much of anything. The tracts on Wicca and Druidry are even worse.

But you know, instead of sitting around whining about how bad Chick Tracts are, why don't you make comic tracts of your own, seeing as you have no problem with evangelical atheism? I bet the kiddies'll be turned on to atheism in no time at all.

If we can get kids to think for themselves and keep astrology, alchemy and ID out of science class then we have a shot.

I'm not much for propaganda. I prefer honesty and facts though I wouldn't mind more stuff like South Park and other satirical fare.

Funny you should say that, though. When I was a toddler, asking the inevitable questions about where we all came from, my dad told me how we'd evolved, and we all 'came from monkeys'. I spent the next few weeks peering into prams looking for a baby that hadn't changed yet and was still a monkey...

Why the hell is the mother gardening and taking the time to teach her son? Why isn't she out killing and stealing?

Top Ten Reasons Why The Hell The Mother Is Gardening And Taking The Time To Teach Her Son Rather Than Going Out Killing And Stealing:

10) Not quite evolved enough

9) Everybody dead for a 10 mile radius already

8) Killing and Stealing are on days that begin with an S or a T. Fridays are for sex with animals.

7) She and sonny will go out later so she can teach him killing and stealing herself.

6) Enslaved teacher has the day off.

5) More interested in aiding the self-engodification of her son.

4) Mesmerized by her son's googly hyp-mo-tizin' eyes.

3) Mellow from contemplating the chimps she evolved from.

2) Experimenting with cross-breeding willow trees and Venus fly traps.

And the number one Reason Why The Hell The Mother Is Gardening And Taking The Time To Teach Her Son Rather Than Going Out Killing And Stealing:

1) Sloth

Purely from the craft perspective, Chick tracts are pretty good, especially considering that they're given away for free. But is Jack Chick really one man, and the one man that writes and draws all the tracts? Is this a pseudonym for a group of authors? The drawing style seems pretty different from one comic to the next. Is the real Jack Chick already dead and cryogenically frozen, quietly awaiting the rapture?

Oh absolutely. Besides, would you really want to get stuck in Heaven for all eternity, with all the bible bangers, creationists, homophobes, fanatics, and suicide bombers as your only company? There'd be nothing to do but sing hymns and kiss God's ass all day long, and you certainly wouldn't be allowed to do anything fun (because if it feels good, it's a sin).

Hell is where the real party is going to be. All the cool people; the scientists, philosophers, skeptics, and thinkers, are going to be there. I hear they have built-in air conditioning in the atheist section of hell, because that's what I believe.

Very interesting...I took another look at "Somebody Loves Me", which is the first tract I ever remember reading. At the time, I thought, "That little kid is bleeding and dying in an alley, and all that Christian kid does is give him LITERATURE?"

Now I see that they've changed the artwork some, replacing the Christian boy with a girl, and adding a balloon (as an obvious afterthought) saying "I'll go get help!"

Reminds me of the revision of Star Wars where Greedo shoots first so Han won't be a cold-blooded murderer...
