View Full Version : Passing the torch?

From reading Wikipedia's entry on James Randi, I see that in 2010 the million dollar challenge will be discontinued. Being 79, James Randi is well within his rights to retire. I just hope some effort is being done to pass the torch to someone else. Ideally a magician as they know the tricks of being a trickster, such as Penn and Teller. Anyone know anything about any effort to get someone to step into Mr. Randi's shoes in 2010?

According to the JREF, the main reasons for the discontinuation of the Million Dollar Challenge seem to be the waste of time with applicants who do not understand the rules - or chose to ignore them - along with the conclusions that the Challenge has served its purpose and the freed prize money could be spent more effectively to educate the willing.

There are many other challenges out there. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_prizes_for_evidence_of_the_paranormal)

But perhaps there will be a successor to the MDC. Decided in a staged TV contest perhaps...?

I've actually asked him that very question and it's no secret that Randi has been looking for a successor for a very long time, but without joy - so far.

GzuzKryzt's link doesn't list Randi's million bucks. It does in a footnote but not in the actual list. Odd.

It is prize number 10 in the link. It has been there for at least a few days. That is as far back as I checked. Probably been there for a long time.

Several posts have been removed from this thread. Please remember that threads in this section should be kept strictly on topic to the Million Dollar Challenge.

REALITY TV SHOW!!!!!1111oneone

I can see it now - 20 skeptics in a house on a desert island, and every week the two teams have to participate in a challenge to debunk something, and the team that gives their 10 thousand dollars away has to go to the jref headquarters and someone gets fired...

Oh - and they all have to grow a huge white beard.

They had actually looked into making the MDC a televised event (it would make funding operations a lot easier). When asked "How often do you plan to give away the prize." and the response is "We don't think anyone will ever win it." the discussion tends to end.

The way I see it, a more entertainment-friendly version of it exists in Penn & Teller's: ********.
