Iranian Activist Wins Nobel Peace Prize

OSLO, Norway - Human rights activist Shirin Ebadi won the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her work fighting for democracy and the rights of women and children, the first Muslim woman and the first Iranian to receive the accolade.

Ebadi, 56, the first female judge in Iran who also was jailed on charges of slandering government officials, was praised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for promoting peaceful, democratic solutions in the struggle for human rights.

This woman seems to deserve the prize, indeed. It's a pity, though, that any moral significance this prize might have had was completely destroyed by, first, giving it to Arafat, and then, by threathening to take it away from Peres, his "peace" partner, after Arafat started his war.

There's always got to be the 'poor, put-upon Israel' angle, doesn't there?

She "deserves" it in the sense of really doing something for peace maybe.

The Israeli situation is not the only thing that taints this Peace Prize. Remember that Le Duc Tho and Henry Kissinger got the prize for the "Paris peace talks" in the Viet Nam war.

There are other examples.

There seem to be three ways of getting the Nobel Peace Prize:

1) Be a doo-gooder NGO such as the Red Cross.

2) Do something for peace, but it must be politically correct from the point of view of the Academy.

3) Kill lots of people, negotiate in bad faith, kill some more, kill and kill and kill. Negotiate in bad faith some more. Then maybe stop killing for a while.

Hey, the pope has done a lot to help bring people together...

Alter boys and priests for example.

Or bankruptsy lawyers and plaintif lawyers.

They should make a rule that the Peace Prize can only be awarded twenty years after the event being honored. That would be enough time that the recipient is probably still alive to be honored, there is some historical perspective to judge the event, and the political importance has worn off.
