Report: U.S. Soldiers Did 'Dirty Work' for Chinese Interrogators (http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=4894921&page=1)

U.S. military personnel at Guantanamo Bay allegedly softened up detainees at the request of Chinese intelligence officials who had come to the island facility to interrogate the men -- or they allowed the Chinese to dole out the treatment themselves, according to claims in a new government report.

Buried in a Department of Justice report released Tuesday are new allegations about a 2002 arrangement between the United States and China, which allowed Chinese intelligence to visit Guantanamo and interrogate Chinese Uighurs held there.

According to the report by Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine, an FBI agent reported a detainee belonging to China's ethnic Uighur minority and a Uighur translator told him Uighur detainees were kept awake for long periods, deprived of food and forced to endure cold for hours on end, just prior to questioning by Chinese interrogators.

Something to look forward to if you get the pink slip!

Why do you hate America?

This is the type of hogwash that Blame America Firsters dream up and believe. It really should be in the Conspiracies forum, not here.

I really wonder abou

Uhhhhh, that cloud over there kinda looks like Sylvia Brown's beerbelly, don'tcha think?

Now that torture is a regular thing in the US anyway, why not make the best out of it by employing torturers on a big scale? :D In times of economic struggle and job-losses, this sounds pretty reasonable as long they don't use chinese torture tools that include those nasty chemicals we know from their toys.

On the other Hand: The Chinese regime is a communist one. We never ever should even consider to talk to them - because this kind of diplomatic blabbering is what will make baby Jesus and McLieberman cry.

You mean those people will be tortured as well if they don't shut up? :)
On a more serious note: I thought torture in China must be pretty ugly - so what kind of freakin Torture is the US doing to be asked by China to do the Job? :eye-poppi

Don't mean to rain on your parade, Shemp, but I see in the article allegations. Not sure it squares with the article title, but then, on page two, the sleep deprivation deal arrives as the opening bid in the usual can of worms, so I'll just remark on the following:
In 2006, after the United States released five Uighurs from Guantanamo, China asked for them to be repatriated so they could be prosecuted as terrorists. The United States declined to do so, out of concern they would not be treated humanely. Instead they transferred the men to Albania, which was the only country out of 90 approached by the U.S. government who would take them.
So, in 2002 the US and China were working together in the war on terror, both governments having a common cause with problems related to Muslim extremists (or so the Chinese seem to have characterized the Uighurs) and even so, US won't sent them back to China due to reservations regarding Chinese prosecution.

So they sent them to Albania.

There are so many jokes to crack on this one, I don't know where to start.

Here's a question for you: more than once I've stayed up all night working, studying, or otherwise being somewhere I'd rather not be, when I'd rather be sleeping.

Am I torturing myself when I do this? Will Amnesty International now put a hit out on all college students spending all nighters studying?

Confusion reigns.

Don't even think about it. It's torture.

Uhhhhh, that cloud over there kinda looks like Sylvia Brown's beerbelly, don'tcha think? So, does the Department of Justice not exist? Only if it's a hoax, it's an awfully convincing one. I mean, the official website of the US Government (http://www.usa.gov/Agencies/Federal/All_Agencies/D.shtml) says that they exist. Can we trust them? You may reply that the government told us that there were WMDs in Iraq, but the existence of the Department of Justice is surely easier to verify. See, for example, USC Title 28 part 2 chapter 31 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/28/usc_sup_01_28_10_II_20_31.html). Or is it all some big government plot?

Does Department of Justice Inspector General Glenn Fine not exist? Only he looks like he exists, there are photographs of him. You may reply that there are photographs of Bigfoot, but the evidence for Glenn Fine is somewhat less blurry.

http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2007/03/08/PH2007030802370.jpg http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/images/glennfine.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:d1En98p5BqKdbM:http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/03oc2AIef1h1n/610x.jpg

Or is your incredulity based solely on the notion that no government agency would ever criticize the actions of government agents, a claim that you appear to find fantastic? Only if so, then I have news for you --- despite what some have claimed, you are not living in a fascist dictatorship.

Or perhaps it is your contention that the report doesn't exist? Only ABC News (http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=4894921&page=1), MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24715187/), Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,356772,00.html), CBS News (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/19/ap/cabstatepent/main4109400.shtml?source=search_story) and the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/21/washington/21detain.html?ex=1369108800&en=008fb58cd48979f2&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink) are all reporting that it does. But perhaps they're all in it together?

Or do you doubt that the report says what they say it says? Only, here is the full text of the report (http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/washington/20080521_DETAIN_report.pdf), and that is what it says. The bits about the Chinese are on pages 183 - 184.

For the purposes of comparison, this is chopped liver.

I agree with you on one point --- you probably should have made your post in the CT forum. You've got the fervent denial, the blinding ideology, the hysteria and hatred directed at anyone who disturbs your fantasy world, the lack of basic research skills and common sense ... and an approach to typography that habitués of that forum will find hauntingly familiar.

Ah ... yes, you're absolutely right, Beerina despises torture, doesn't he? It had not occurred to me to imagine that a man who describes universal heath care as "cumulatively murderous on the order of Hitler or Stalin" could possibly have any ideas that I would agree with.

I can only apologize profusely to Beerina (treasure it, that's not going to happen again), hope that he enjoys the spectacle of me making a tit of myself as much as the rest of you, and wander off to look for a genuine idiot.

I see we have a Cicero thread ... or are you going to tell me that he's just one big joke?

I'd tend to agree with the statement that he is one big joke, but possibly not in the manner you intended the question.

I heard rumors that there's more than that...

Another Torture Technique Revealed (http://thinkprogress.org/2008/05/21/water-treatment/); "They stick my head into the water and in the same time they punched me into my stomach so I had to inhale all this water." – Murat Kurnaz

It seems that sometimes people just live up to stereotypes.
