You beat me to that one!

Anyway, surely a guitarist is a guitarist - should be able to play rhythm or solo depending on what the gig demands.

Why?

Sorry but that is a statement that demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of what goes on in a group. You might as well say that he should be able to play the drums, or keyboard or bass, and byt the way if he also could play the trombone it would be nice in the funky stuff.

Musicians have different roles in a band and whilst the lead guitarist gets most of the spotlight the band wouldn't function without a good rythm guitarist and i have heard a lot of very gifted rythm guitarists that was unable to play a solo.

My short list : Malcolm Young - Keith Richards - Tom Fogarty - John Lennon - Bruce Welch.

Malcolm Young is IMHO one of the best hard rock rythm guitarists besides that he has written some of AC/DC's best riffs.:au:

Got to mention Jimi Hendrix here. Apart from his great lead work, his rhythm guitar work was excellent, and he was also pretty good on bass guitar too.

Yep, Keith Richards. Two minutes at a time, and he creates some of the most famous riffs in history.
