An Indiana woman was abducted by a rejected suitor and his accomplice. Convinced that her abductor was going to kill her, she took advantage of a distraction and shot him in the mouth, then escaped.

Some noteworthy points about the incident:

1) She carried her handgun accessible in a hip holster.

2) She carried her handgun with a round in the chamber, apparently a specific decision made knowing that some people carry with the chamber empty.

3) The abductor seems to be alive in spite of a "head shot" that struck him in the mouth.

4) She had the presence of mind to take his handgun when she made her escape.

CCW - I thought you mis-abbreviated Creedence Clearwater Revival. I was wondering if those guys would ever get back together.

But seriously - it was not CCW, according to her: "It wasn't luck. I'm blessed, honestly blessed. It was God's grace. I had an angel with me," she said.

Yeah, right - a 9 mm angel.

She is a bad example of ccw. She should have shot him the chest until he fell to the ground.

It doesn't sound like she incapacitated him well enough to ensure that her life was no longer in peril. Also note that with a 9mm the headshot wasn't fatal.

I think this is more evidence that the minimum instructors recommend should be raised from 9mm to perhaps 357sig or 40sw.

Explain to someone who knows next to nothing about guns:

What is this CCW? Some acronym for a concealed weapon?

CCW = concealed carry of a weapon. Under the legal permit system adopted by most states.

She shot him in the mouth, so the exit wound was likely through the cheek or jaw. Switching to a higher caliber likely would not have made a difference. 9mm is plenty powerful, if one plows through your heart or brain you are going to be a goner, end of story.

In WWII allied special forces would often take out sentries with a special suppresed and sub-sonic .22 pistol. One good head shot is all you need.

That said, I would probably recommend carrying a higher caliber revolver anyway, as its easier to handle and less likely to jam. No one makes 9mm revolvers anymore so it would make sense to pick one of the larger bores.

She may not have had the chance. Remember, she was constricted in a car at the time. Especially if there had been the back of a seat between them, the mouth shot may have been the only shot she had.

Inasmuch as any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, any DGU where you get away without any further harm is a good DGU.
