Today (30 May 2008) marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Swedish scientist Hannes Alfvén. He is sometimes known as one of the founding fathers of the field of plasma science, but while his work culminated in being awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize for physics, he considered himself something of a maverick and dissident, a view shared by some scientists.
