A recent poll in Canada indicates that belief in (a) god might be on the decline. The report claims that one quarter of the Canadian population does not believe in god. Does anyone know what the current percentage of the American population are Atheist???

Are we positive reality is gaining ground? It's absolutely no good if they're moving from believing in God to believing in crystal healing and homeopathy. I've had several self-described atheists declare me close-minded for denying their particular brand of surreality.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'll hold the fireworks back until I see cell phone companies stop publishing guides on how to avoid excessive cell phone radiation, thanks.

Yeah, I know. It occurred to me also that perhaps folks might just be trading one form of woo for another. The article wasn't specific reference that possibility. Still, gotta hope for the best... :D

Or those "turn off cell phones" signs at gas pumps.

It may not be people ceasing to believe in God and starting to believe in other woo. It could be just people in the process of being skeptical. They just lose one belief that has no real evidence. Their other woo beliefs just continue for the time being.

In related news church attendance in Australia declined by 7% between 1996 and 2001 Link http://www.ncls.org.au/default.aspx?sitemapid=2106. This I believe is more accurate that asking people what they believe.

As for the USA belief in God See http://channels.isp.netscape.com/news/package.jsp?name=fte/notbelieveingod/notbelieveingod
Eleven percent of U.S. adults admit they don't believe in God. Surprisingly, while 73 percent profess a belief in God, they are riddled with doubt, not certain God actually exists.
Specifically, 42 percent admit they are not "absolutely certain" there is a God, while 15 percent are only "somewhat certain." Eleven percent think there is probably no God and 16 percent aren't sure
This shows you must be careful what questions you need to ask. And in how to interpret the answers.

If you Google what you want to find out then you will get your answer.

Edit. Only about 20% of people in the USA attend church weekly. Another 20% say they attend church but do not. http://www.religioustolerance.org/rel_rate.htm

As someone who participated in the poll mentioned in the OP, I know damn well what I meant when I gave my answer. No God, no crystals, no Force, no Woo.
