The Catholic Church and sex

Here is a 45 minute BBC documentary on The Catholic Church and sex (http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsa/n5ctrl/progs/panorama/latest.ram), covering topics of abortion, contraception, and the impact on undeveloped contries. For example the Phillipines overpopulation problems and African AIDS epidemic.


If you have any respect for the church you might not after watching this. At least not for the conservative elements that are in control. Seeing representatives of the church in the Phillipines, Africa, and the Vaticant spreading the same lie that latex condoms have poors that HIV can pass through.

I dont understand the Catholic Church's views of sex...

"No sex before marriage"
"Man on top, woman on the bottom, any other position is an abomination in the eyes of the Lord"
"Sex only for procreation, never for pleasure"
"Even mere dirty thoughts and wet dreams are an abomination in the eyes of the Lord"
"Never use contraceptives"
"Have as many Catholic children as your body is able to produce"
"Abortion is forbidden, even in cases of rape and incest... because God has a plan or something..."

Don't they also hate masterbation? Or "spilling your seed"? If you aren't using your 'seed' for procreation, then it's for fun and that is not taking your seed seriously.

There's no smiling in Catholic sex - it's a determined grimace or nothing.

It is lost in the 15th century, basically, as far as morals and thinking go. The inanities and sheer hypocrisy is often breathtaking to behold. Closed orders, subordination of women, sexual repression, dangerous infighting amongst the clergy, pomp and ceremony, oppulence, Papal infallibility, secret banking, etc, etc.

And yet this same church owns some of the most beautiful artifacts and buildings and objects ever made in this world. And there are church disciples who are struggling gamely with little on behalf of many of the downtrodden of this world.

It's VERY hard to reconcile one with the other...

That´s because regardless of their claims, the catholic church is composed by humans like we. The same faults, the same hunger for power & money...

But then, you have to give the Catholic Church credit for recognizing that not all sex is sinful.

But, sex is not sin if [according to some Medieval penance guide, can't remember the name]:

- it happens in marriage;
- exactly one man and one woman is involved;
- it doesn't happen on Sunday, Friday, or some Saint's Day [though this one may cause some problems today given the rate of canonizing new saints.];
- the sole intention is getting children;
- the woman doesn't have a period;
- the man is on the top;
- it is done only once; and
- neither participant enjoys it.

If the (married) couple enjoys it only a bit, then it is only a minor sin.

And even if they are married by the Catholic church and have many children, it can be annulled if one pays enough money. Yet, somehow, the kids are not then considered illegitimate, but the marriage is.

And yet anullments are allowed but divorces are not. Go figure.

Entertainer Steve Allen was raised in the Catholic Church. He was excommunicated for no reason other than he divorced and remarried. His second marriage was, by most accounts, a successful one, lasting over 45 years.

1. Divorce is specifically forbidden by the bible.

2. Divorces come from the state; annulments come from the church.

As I understand it, throughout the middle ages the Catholic Church was often a front group for pedophiles and sexual predators, see Florence Rush's The Best Kept Secret (book) for a very objective study in the matter and more details than I care to furnish.
