His episode on Who Do You Think You Are? was really moving, too.

As an Australian I'd like to apologise for Dame Edna Everage being foistered onto the world...
(a bit of a tangent I know but when I hear that name I'm reminded that lack of talent or humour isn't necessarily an impediment to comic success)

The Dames a treasure. Maybe you're too young to get it. ;)

skeptic of oz, I understand your concern. I'm Canadian and my feeling of responsibility for the likes of Jim Carrey and Mike Myers is almost unbearable.

But I quite like Dame Edna and think s/he is not at all untalented.

Then again, I actually watched Young Einstein and I laughed hard at the live kitties baked in a pie bit. So I'm not sure my judgement can be trusted.

Dame Edna is a gift to humanity. She provokes great laughter, and that is a good thing for mind and body.

I see no reason why our friends from Down Under should apologize.

Great video, Grayman.

It's strange how some Australians get embarassed by the fame of Dame Edna and her compatriot, Sir Les Patterson, the Australian Cultural Attache. They should celebrate their achievements.

You know, if I ever call a psychic hotline, I think I should start the call more or less like this:

"So here I am. So spit it out then. At what time tomorrow?"

The "reader" probably picked up on the laughter in the background, and decided to pass on the call.
She did sound quite young.
Of course were she truly psychic, she "should have known" the phone call was bogus from the git-go.

Indeed! I once had the personal pleasure of being dribbled on by Sir Les. I haven't washed that part of my anatomy since. The man's a National Treasure!

No I'm 38 and both Dame Edna and Barry Humphries make me cringe!

I first discovered Dame Edna about six years ago on the recommendation of one of my favorite folk singers. I saw him/her when the tour came through Houston and enjoyed it enormously.

But I have to admit, it is mostly one joke, and if I were subjected to a constant barrage of it, I think it would get old quickly. Still, you gotta admire an actor who stays in character all the time.

I'll keep saying it...
Dame Edna and Sir Les Patterson aren't funny.
When I was young(er) I was always told that a joke loses its humour when it is repeated over and over again. (I was actually a child when I learnt this and many comedians as a adults never seem to learn this!)
You know what? I've discovered that what's even worse is when something isn't even funny the first time and it gets repeated (especially for half a century!)
Fellow Aussies don't you think humour like the Chaser's various incarnations (War On.../CNNN/Election Specials), D-Generation and Frontline are they type of Aussie humour we want exposed overseas?
IMO Dame Edna's act isn't worthy to look the boots of the above mentioned acts!

The best comment I've ever heard about psychic hotlines is: Why don't they call you?

Sceptic of OZ... I gotta agree.. while I (rarely) find Dame Edna funny (Sir les is often amusing).. I do think Barry Humphries is clever and hey.. if it makes money why not stick at it !

I think things like Dame Edna get WAAAY more recognition than our good comedy because it is sumtin different !

I guess you've got a point there...
Only thing is when you see and hear it for so long it kind of ceases being "different".:boggled:

No, Dame Edna is not funny at all. There is some really brilliant Australian humour, why do you suffer through DE?

AliasN: Canada makes up for it for giving us the Trailer Park Boys.

It's strange, the only people on this thread who don't find Dame Edna funny are her compatriots.

A similar parallel with 'Mr Bean'. I've yet to meet a pom that doesn't hate him with a passion.

here's another aussie who doesn't like Dame Edna. The bits I've seen of The Chasers War is very funny

For me the humor wasn't as much with Dame Edna, as it was the interaction of DE and the "psychic" along with the expressions on Graham Norton's face. That's what I found amusing.
