My brother just send me this link http://www.freerice.com/index.php
It contains a test of vocabulary which I thought I'd share with the forum to see what results people would get. The test does not end as far as I can determine, so one should just take an appropriate number of tries until you have a stable score.
I had a score of 38 after 1600 corns of rice (it donates 20 grains of rice for each word you get right.)

I played for about ten minutes before I got tired of it, with a score of 49. I wonder if this would work from my Crackberry when I'm stuck waiting someplace?

They weren't words that I commonly use, but those I didn't know I could usually figure out from the root. I stopped at 4000 with a vocab level of 41.
What does the level mean?

2000 grains, steady at level 47

Level 40 for 2000 grains of rice.
From the website:
FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level. When you get three words in a row right, you go to a harder level. This one-to-three ratio is best for keeping you at the “outer fringe” of your vocabulary, where learning can take place.
There are 60 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 50.

Unless something has changed since February it repeats the words a lot. You could get to 40 or so before you would start seeing repeats.

Oh. I thought the repeats were intentional as the program only seemed to repeat the ones I missed. Re-inforcement and all that.

I was confused for a while, since I did this a few times last year (after reading about it on a previous thread here) and was positive that the highest level was 50. So I thought the poeple here claiming to get 52 etc were just making up their scores. Turns out they have changed the scoring.
There also seems to be a smaller selection of words for each level than there was before.

FWIW - I tried it yesterday and my score went down to something like 33, up from 43.

When the words started repeating, I got bored and quit. The game would definitely benefit from a larger variety of words.

That's rather impressive; no misses would be level 50 for 1000 grains.

The words only repeat if you miss them ;)
As the levels go up, not only do the words get more rare, but the definitions get a bit dodgy as well--more like crossword clues than synonyms :-/

Using 2000 grains as a decent stopping point, I only got a 49 in both categories.
I probably should have done better, but I was too impatient. On the other hand I don't know how I knew some of those words. A lot of it is examining the root, but still.... Just "lucky" I guess.
But thanks for sharing the link to this quiz. It was fun.

Thanks, though I had hoped to edge out a native or two. Oh well the road to megalomania is paved with disappointments.

45 was my average, and the highest I managed was a 47. Now what I'd curious about is what a person of average reading ability would get on this test. Considering some people I know, I'd be surprised if many people could score higher than a 20...

I understand :). I was a bit disappointed at my own score too. When I was in high school, my mother was an English teacher (at another school). She used to bring home the Reader's Digest her school was subscribed to. I always did pretty good at the vocabulary tests they sported.

Moi? :duck:
More like a serious compulsion for crossword puzzles, a decent working vocabulary in German, French, Italian, and Kreyol, but most of all the quick recognition that every error revealed the "correct" answer ;)
Besides, that "ain't all that". A little math reveals I missed 4 out of 10, I only got that far by learning from my mistakes.

Your "French" is self-referential!
Your "Latin" is understood by pigs. (Not that that's a bad thing I hasten to add).

Yes, they allow you to discover the correct answer by repeating your missed ones. This is a great teaching tool, if you stick with it.
I liked "sudoriferous" since I only learned it by giving IQ tests.

I might leave the page open again, and see if I feel like playing some more later. It's fun, but I can only take so much at a time.

Some of the words, though, were probably easier to guess for a non-English speaker. Many had latin roots and others were simply foreign terms, although "girasol" had me stumped. That's a sunflower!

I have to agree with Solus that many people I know would be struggling to score 20, mainly because their reading is confined to trashy tabloids.
