This is an old (Feb 2007) Tyra Banks show, but I heard someone mention it, and I had to see it myself.
Some background: Tyra Banks is a former model who has also recorded a song entitled Shake ya Booty, Hosted the reality TV show Next Top Model and whose modeling highlights include being on the cover of the Victoria's Secret catalog and the Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Edition. In 2005, she got her own Oprah clone TV show. This broadcast is a criticism of teenage culture in which she essentially says that lately teenagers have turned to prostitution and porn, and furthermore that the only explanation for making money that way is that those teenagers have a history of abuse and mental problems.
Sasha Grey is a 21 year old porn star who has done porn since she turned 18 when she debuted in an orgy scene, and pretty much does just about any sort of porn you could name, including bondage, and identifies as a switch (Someone who can be either a Dominant or submissive.) She's an atheist, and professes to enjoy her work, and claims she was never abused.
Tyra and other guests on the show, including the audience, basically insult Sasha, claim that no really, she is mentally screwed up, and her being a porn star is unhealthy for her, and teenagers in general.
I haven't even finished watching it, and it's already painful. One thing that keeps bugging me in particular is how they keep emphasizing how young she looks, even though she's an adult. It's as if the rules they want to have apply to teenage minors ought to apply to her merely because she looks young.

This attitude is as prevalent among liberals and conservatives, I'd venture to guess, but it strikes me as deeply anti-feminist and, coming from Tyra Banks, deeply hypocritical.
ETA: If the mods want to move this from the public forum area to the Forum Community, because it's expressly about porn, feel free. Tyra even opens the show my reminiscing about her teenage years and claiming that teenagers in porn and prostitution is a recent development in a false Golden Age fallacy, because we all know the 80's was a time without porn or prostitution.

Aye. Banks was in the "sex sells" business and seems to have, in her advancing age, forgotten where her hotness took her.
Tyra even opens the show my reminiscing about her teenage years and claiming that teenagers in porn and prostitution is a recent development in a false Golden Age fallacy, because we all know the 80's was a time without porn or prostitution.
Tyra seems to overlook Tracy Lord, infamous teen/jailbait pornstar of the 1980's.
If that young lady, of age, chooses sex on film as her career, she may love her work. How is that a sign of mental illness? If anything, she's smarter than most people, in terms of career choice:
If what you do for a living is something you enjoy, and you get paid for it, you aren't working.
She is, I hope, aware of the risks that the industry holds, and will mitigate them, or she won't, and deal with the consequences of that decision.
The Tyra and crew slamming of her seems to me, at best, catty, and at worst, pandering to a particular audience. Who do you suppose that audience is? ;)
(Hint: Tyra's show isn't targeted at men, eh? )

There should be an automatic ban on posters who promise to deliver a porn star via youtube tags, but don't know how the tags work...

Remember, if you ever have someone on your show, who advocates a non-WASP lifestyle, it is basically your duty to mock them and insult them, unless they are doing so for insane religious reasons. Then it's all acceptable.
Person makes money in an industry she doesn't have a problem with of her own free will = mentally ill.
Person who walks around in robes doing nothing but hanging out in the forest, making weird pictures and chanting = deeply spiritual and admirable.
I forget how much I hate our society some days. Thanks for the reminder.

Well, I guess Tyra would know all about making a good living thanks to happening to be gorgeous and sexy. :-/

I don't care about Tyra Banks or her show or her opinions but Sasha Grey is hot. Banks probably wishes she could remember when she was that young.

i will admit that i have watched... lets see 7 seasons of americas next top model. trashy television is a guilty pleasure of mine. anyway. tyra banks is one of the most arrogant, pretentious, self absorbed people on the planet. she tries waaayyyy too hard too hard to seem like she is smart, and its pretty obvious she isnt. anyone familiar with the soup knows how outrageous/crazy/full of herself tyra is.
i took this oppertunity to tyra bash but seriously i wouldnt expect anything thought provoking or quality from her. shes only entertaining in that you can laugh at her for trying to hard on a regular basis.

she got totally pissed when an applicant on antm compared stripping to modeling. she seems to genuinely think you have to be really smart to be a model so its different than selling your body in other ways

I'm confused too. Models only have to look good. Strippers have to have enough brain cells to at least chat up customers between dances.

And, given the body types most heterosexual men prefer, strippers have to be smart enough to eat every now and then.

She's posted a comment video on her YouTube channel - and she points out that whilst she turned up dressed, as she usually does, looking like a young woman, the TBS wardrobe people made her wear the outfit she dons for the interview, which makes her look extraordinarily young.

Last time I checked, being an 18 year old porn star was legal, while being a 14 year old prostitute wasn't. Putting the two things together seems like a dishonest smear, and starting off with it pretty much set the tone for the whole thing. And sure as hell Sasha Grey doesn't look like an eighth grader. The whole "OMG, the HORROR!!" attitude from Tyra is pretty ridiculous.
I'm sure most porn chicks have some issues, but I doubt they are any more serious than what Britney Spears and Tom Cruise are dealing with. All that sex is risky from a medical standpoint, but you don't see people preaching at skydivers and extreme sports participants as though they are little children. And, of course, no one has EVER done interviews with male porn stars where they are talked down to and treated like they are babies who need protecting.
For all the talk about how pornography degrades and exploits the female performers, I don't see how the people looking to "protect" adult women from their freely-made choices are any better. Here, for instance, we have an example of Tyra Banks exploiting and demeaning a porn chick for the sake of ratings. Tyra is also using her to show just how "caring" and "outraged" she is over the whole thing.

I had never heard of Sasha Grey before reading this thread, but she seems relatively together.
Plus her MySpace page reveals that she's a fan of my old band, which practically makes her a fan of me(!), so as far as I am concerned she is right on.

She's good at her job, and takes what she does very seriously. If you like porn generally, her scenes are worth tracking down. She's obviously intelligent, well-read and has given pornography a great deal of thought. She's young and perhaps a little naive sometimes, but that's no justification for castigating her.
What band were you in?
ETA: Holy crap! Matthew Best? From Psychic TV? Genesis P. Orrige's Psychic TV? Wooh!

Well I would think that the athleticism for a good poll dance is something few anorexic super-models could manage.

to me it seems to essentially be the same thing. you move your body around x way to get y result from people observing. and with the kind of modeling she has done its mostly about trying to look sexy. I guess shes better than strippers because she gets paid more

they made it super obvious that they edited out most of what sasha had to say. there is a part where you can tell that her mic is turned off. its so crazy that they insult her for being distant and cold and then dont allow her to have her say.

One time Joel showed a clip in which some actress was telling Tyra about how she was volunteering her time for some worthy cause and that it was a life-changing experience. Tyra butted in by saying "I had a life-changing experience when I made the cover of Sports Illustrated!" Nice.

These daytime shows like to get good ratings, and two of the ways they accomplish that is by 1) having sensational guests, like porn stars. No doubt having a porn star on your show will get eyeballs. 2) I really think daytime TV shows in particular, like to have guests on that act as scapegoats, that the host and audience can judge and look down on, presumably to feel better about themselves. Lame. I find it hypocritical to benefit from having Grey on the show, while lambasting her for being immoral. I don't think their intention was to have an intelligent, objective discussion about working in the porn industry.

I disagree but it's only a quibble/crosstalk. While models are told by agents/handlers/washed up models like Tyra*to be anorexic and maintain a certain look, strippers cannot rely on steady income from their physical appearance alone. {snip edited 5 times already comments... anyway..} Tall, scrawny and dead eyed might get you runway work and photo shoots, but one must have some semblance of a personality for a guy to spend time with you while he drops $20/dance.
* I want to talk more **** about her, but the guilty white racist in me thinks she's really hot... still.

For US: Yes, TB is still pretty, no problems with the eye candy. Her only problem arises when she speaks and reveals the vacuum between her ears.

lingerie models generally weigh more, and thats what tyra was basically.
models have to know how to move too. how you walk is a big factor in if you get shows and know how to pose.
anyway, it doesnt take a genius to do any of those things. reading people and chatting away is a skill but i dont think you neccesarily have to be very smart to do it.

Totally. I actually used to kinda like him, until I started listening more and researching and finding a lot of BS.
And I love how Tyra kept going "Oh, you look so young, you are like an eighth grader."
And I didn't really get the whole argument against it, other than she is so young and BDSM is weird. I mean, the most they got was that doing anal a lot would lead to anal prolapse (or something like that), but I don't think I would trust Dr. Drew on that one.
And even if that is true, then if she just stops doing anal scenes, then how is it so "destructive"?
And I liked the "Any man who watches BDSM porn is violent and thinks it is okay to abuse women" argument.
