View Full Version : Searching for a short story (of a skeptical nature)

Folks
There's a short story I've read somewhere on the Internet, and I was wondering whether anyone might be able to help me find it again.
It's a what-if story set in a world in which woo-woo beliefs are now standard, and involves a man standing trial, and being found guilty on the basis of psychic and other woo-woo evidence. The only other part of the story I can vaguely remember involves the court stenographer having private doubts about the efficacy of the pyramid her computer is located within (or something like that).
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Sorry I can't provide any more information than that.
Cheers

I wish someone would answer this. The best I can do is that it reminds me of stories by Poul Anserson (picture a "doctor" killing germs by giving them the evil eye through a microscope) and Anthony Boucher (The Complete Werewolf) but I don't recognize this one...........

There is a site which helps with the plots of science fiction stories. I had a question at about this level of vagueness (Frankenstein monster playing professional baseball) and got an answer back within a few hours. If you want me to track down the site, let me know.

Well........I wouldn't ask you to go to any great effort, but if you happen to think of it, then it does sound like an interesting site............

I am a member of at least one site that answers questions about stories, but there are others also. But you can try the one I am referring to - sffworld.
I am B5B7 on that site, and often answer such questions, but unfortunately do not know answer to this one, but someone else there might.
NOTE: I was unable to provide link to site due to under 15 posts restriction.:(

Was it Condemned to Repeat It (http://mike-combs.com/writings/condemnd.htm) by Mike Combs?
That was one that appeared on the Swift a few years ago. (Actually this one (http://www.randi.org/jr/2006-03/031706carroll.html)).
I read some of the other stories on that site. I especially like the one called "Whose Image?".

Well, I don't know if that's the story or not, but it certainly works for me. Thanks.
