Plans to build 200-foot crosses along highway (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5880283.html)

Grace Community Church is raising money to build two enormous crosses that its pastor says will mark the entrances to Houston on Interstate 45. The crosses will likely rank among the largest in the world.

Counting their bases, the crosses would reach up to 200 feet. Each would dwarf I-45's current symbol of Texas largeness. "Big Sam" Houston, the colossal statue in Huntsville, stands 77 feet tall with its base.

[ ... ]

Riggle sees the crosses as a symbolic stand against moral decay. "The freeways are littered with sexually oriented businesses," he said. "I'd rather see something that stands for hope, life and faith."

He hopes that other churches follow Grace's lead. "What if there was one of these at every entrance to the city?" he asks on a YouTube video. "You talk about marking our city for God!"

I thought "marking" was what male dogs did, buthasjustme.

But it's nice to know that even in the community of believers there are reasonable voices being raised:

The plan has its critics. The Rev. Matt Tittle, who leads Bay Area Unitarian Universalist Church, headlined a recent blog posting at HoustonBelief.com, "City of giant crosses? No thanks!"

"Not everybody feels honored, or even safe, in a city fortified by crosses," Tittle elaborated on the phone. "The crosses don't offend me. But they're a symbol of intimidation to some. And Christians don't need a monstrosity to seal their faith."

[ ... ]

Grace has the "right to do anything they want" on its property, said Elliot Gershenson, the leader of Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston.

"I would question, however, whether in the times of scarcity that we are in, there aren't better ways to express the way each of us, in our own way, walk in God's path," said Gershenson, president and CEO of Interfaith Ministries.

Ahhh...the giant phallus of Christ, hitting you constantly over the head demanding that you stop persecuting them.

What a monstrosity (the one in Effingham, anyway). I'll be overjoyed when it gets hit by a thunderstorm or tornado big enough to bring it down, as eventually it will.

"It's Christ's cross, but we'll put lightening rods and air navigation lights on it as the law says we must. Even though god doesn't need them. And, of yes, two telecoms are putting up antennas on it, they rented space behind the chapel in the base for their electronics. And there are five firms bidding on some of the ad space lower down; they promise to keep it tasteful and godly. Not so many want the higher space, so we have to relax the standards somewhat to sell it. If those uppity southerners get theirs higher than ours, though, the local Christian station has promised to look into putting a radio mast on top and blow them out of the water."

My favorite passage from the beatitudes is the one in which Jesus says, "Blessed are they that build the world's biggest friggin' cross, for they shall inherit the earth." No, wait a minute. He said "Blessed are the meek."

I really hope a tornado brings this thing down and leaves the adult entertainment places standing. Let's see the fundies try to rationalize that.

They'd find some way. I wish I'd bookmarked the fundxtian site that told about how the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami had washed away every building in a particular town except for the mosque, which was left standing; the "Christians" running the site added, "Isn't that just what you'd expect from Satan, destroying everyone's house except his own!"

CW, you already quoted it in the OP, but I think it stands repeating.

Yeah. Because Christ was all about the ostentatious displays of piety.

Or else they'll say that god is just testing them to see if they have the resolve to rebuild it.

Yeah. Because Christ was all about the ostentatious displays of piety.

Beware the clerics who stand about on corners praying loudly so all may see. They are awesome!

Who thinks a cross would be a great way to advertise a BDSM shop?

That's his ... ahhh, phallus? No wonder he doesn't have children.

There may be hope yet. Perhaps they are environmentally conscious Christians, and the cross' arms will be designed to turn in the wind, thus generating power for all of Houston.

Or maybe not.
